I have a few questions about thousand sons.

1. How do you feel about the Icon of Flame?

2. What do you use for Anti-Tank, and which of the options do you think will be carried over to the codex?

3. Do you run transports or use the points to buy more units?

4. What do you run for HQs? Are winged Daemon Princes still hot stuff?

5. How does everyone feel about Magnus?

So my 8th exp is limited, but in my humble experience this is what I've noticed:

1 take it in narrative play, ditch it for matched

2 I take at least one auto/lascannon predator and that works pretty well.

3 I go transports all the way, but I like to rhino rush my opponent, YMMV

4 winged deamon princes are still hot stuff, but of a different sort. They won't annihilate half an army, but they make a wonderful disincentive for enemy charging units for our normally cc-challenged rubricae. Keep them protected until needed and until they are take full advantage of their aura as only DP's and Magnus allow us to reroll ones.

5 I haven't played Magnus 8th, but I look forward to trying.

1. Cool idea, utterly useless and a waste of points, unfortunately.

2. FW stuff, especially the dreads. Failing that, DiscoPred.

3. I tend to eschew transports due to fast HQs, Warptime, and the amazing resilience of Rubrics against many lists.

4. Winged Princes are hot, Ahriman is even hotter.

5. Kinda weak compared to 7th, but still a beast.

1. Dont use it and dont care.

2. Currently a pair of maulerfiends. They are decent fire magnets to boot.

3. Walking rubrics. Although i am considering some rhinos since my opponents like 2D weapons...a lot...

4. Havent wanted one but i feel like it is a true force multiplier that can hang on its own...might get one...maybe.

5. Havent tried him yet but once the army approaches 2k i might add him in.

1. icon is garbage, hopefully will be remedied in codex.

2. Predator, lascannon missile launcher helbrute, Magnus.

3. Rhinos are the unsung heroes of our army.

4. Winged princes are solid as ever, Ahriman on disc as said is not slouch himself.

5. He is the be best thing in 40k next to guilliman. Point for point the best cannon in the game. Without him our army is, competitively speaking, trash.

1) Bad, do not take it.

2) Anti tank can be a mixture of smite spam, damage spell, Helbrute with weapons, Predator, daemon engines, Land raider. I would suspect everything (or close to it) will be carried over.

3) I have done both, transports are great overall to protect our expensive infantry but more units is always good. Tzaangors in particular you can horde up pretty easily and effectively. (abuse the 5++ re-roll ones with their statline, makes em fairly tough)

4) HQ winged princes are always great, now that we have the full 6 spells from the chaos lore I dont have many issues running 1 exalted, but always upgrade to Ahriman if possible. hes just that much better for a pittance more.

My usual HQ's look like 1 prince, 1 ahriman, 1 exalted in 2000 or more, in 1500 prince/exalted or ahriman/exalted is the usual.

5) Magnus IMO is great, but he will die as the minute he hits the field he is focus fired. Take the +1 invul save spell, hit him with it, and pray to not roll a "2" lol.  He will die, but he will always take his toll on the opposition. I have only used him a handful of times, and to be 100% fair he has always paid back his points in destructive power.

Lots of good answers and a good number of them are meta dependent. For instance I can't walk Rubrics up the table here they won't make it. We use lots of terrain, just very numerous assault armies and indirect fire galore.

Rhino wall is a good tactic in 8th imho.

The one thing I will say though is Magnus was far more survivable in 7th. I still see him far more successfully run in Tzeentch lists (regrettably).

I expect a retooling of Magnus for sure when we upgrade our Dec.

@1000 sons, how are you using your rhinos?

I've only played a handful of games though I've gone back and forth on rhinos and think I am going back on my next game. Much more tougher than they used to be, allows warptime elsewhere on other units, decent fire power support and useful for screening and charges.

I am thinking your right about them being work horses.

What experiences have others had for not taking rhinos or better use for points?

Prot, just missed your post. Good point on rhinos.

Rhinos are hit and miss for me. I have won games with 2 units in rhinos and I have won games with 2 units walking on foot.

Are they helpful in 8th? Definitely, with the propensity of wise opponents to drop your Rubrics and Scarabs with Damage 2 weaponry.

Are they an auto-include? Debatable. Maybe not.

Thousand Sons are in such a position where when I make a list for a random opponent (I just take stuff out that I want and add it up, not tailoring), often times I deliberately avoid the Rhinos because I know that they might not contribute to a win. That's a positive option and saves me 144pts.

1. Icon of flames : bad, bad, bad. Unless it's free (PL)

2. Anti-tank : I use allies (Forgefiend and Obliterators from the Chaos Dex, for stratagems). As a pure TS I would run 2 Predators.

3. Transport : 2 Rhinos with 2x9 Rubrics (3 flamers, 1 Soulreaper). Usually it works well since most anti-tank goes to my Heldrake / Forgefiend.

4. HQ : Ahriman. Ahriman. And Ahriman. Then I usually add a regular Sorcerer and in another detachment a Sorcerer and a Warpsmith (allied CSM)

5. Magnus : On paper he looks great, but I don't own him. We don't use LoW a 2k points around here.

  • 1 month later...

1. I take as point filler

2. 2 auto/laz predators and 2 hellblades not with laz

3. Rhinos get my Tzaangors where they need to be. My rubrics and sorcs walk

4. Ahriman + Exalted Sorc, best bang for your buck.

5. Total point sink. Will die to focused fire, doesnt have the +1 invul like Tzeentch demons though he should. 100 points less and he'd be useable.

I have a few questions about thousand sons.

1. No....just No. Hopefully fixed in the Codex (as many have said).

2. I use Preds, plus Forgefiends and Defilers with the Changeling nearby. Volume of fire and Smite otherwise. Multiple cheap Helbrutes with Las/Missile look promising. I think we may lose the Vindicator, but not sure, since they specifically mention Vindicators in the fluff in Wrath of Magnus. Everything else we have, we'll probably keep.

3. Transports are meta-dependent for me. Usually use them only for small offensively based squads or to deliver character spam. Exception is the Storm Eagle I own because that thing is a beast and is kitted for more AT.

4. For HQ's, I run Ahriman on foot with a big squad, next to a foot Daemon Prince with a Warp Bolter and Talons. Winged Daemon Princes are fine, but I use mine to support my infantry and provide countercharge if they are assaulted. With his high movment speed and Warptime, I don't miss the wings. I also use Terminator Sorcerers with Meltas and occasionally an Exalted Sorcerer on a disk.

5. I don't play Magnus for narrative reasons. I prefer Ahriman and run Prodigal Sons. I also have a friend who runs a Magnus-loyalist army and is using him, so I want to be a bit different.
