Sorry if this is the wrong forum, didn’t really know where else to post this

So I’ve started up a dark mech themed IG army. Ive done up a number of infantry, and now I’m looking at how to approach the tanks. I don’t want to use standard, out of the box Russ and chimera tanks, I really want something darker. Whenever I’m looking for inspiration, I find myself wanting tanks with legs. Problem is, the rules are so different between walkers and tanks

So my question to the community is, how would you feel playing against an army where the “tanks” are walkers, but obviously using tank rules? Would this be fine, or am I treading on rocky ground here?

So long as it's clear what they are and you can't confuse genuine walker unit types with your modified tanks, then it should be okay for casual games, if you let your opponent know what's supposed to be what.   :)

That’s awesome, thanks for the replies! My gaming group has kinda disbanded lately, and I’ve been away from playing at shops for so long I have no idea what’s acceptable like that

Ammonius, great advice on the shorter legs, that never crossed my mind. Thanks again!

Please post some pictures once you start converting, I always love seeing more walkers!  (must be the battletech fan in me.  :) )

Ahhh, here we go!  Cypher871, Heresy-Online, 0251011.M03.   Step by step conversion guide (with pictures!) on a very nicely done predator walker.

try and keep them the same footprint + height and i wouldn't have an issue - it would only be a deal with line of sight etc if your leman russ was able to see over all of the terrain because of its defiler legs  :P

We use to use Leman Russ rules to represent Knights back in 2nd Ed, and build our “Knights” with the same general foot print as the tank. So there’s community history in support of the idea.

Also, Defilers and Onagers are walking tanks, which can be used to work out how your walking tanks might look.

I don't know where you'd get the bits, but you may also want to look at Dust Tactics for inspiration as well.  It is a weird war 2 type of game with a lot of walkers taking the place of the Shermans and Panzers of the age.  Heck, their bits may even fit, as I think the scale is close enough to work with 40K.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! It’s reassuring to know the spirit of the game is still there. I fondly remember the days of 2nd edition with cardboard land raiders and deodorant bottle land speeders

Graysparrow, thanks for that link, that’s a great read

Currently I’m looking at the Onager legs for hellhounds, and defiler legs for the russes. Though I feel I’ll need to heavily modify the defiler legs to keep the dimensions right and to maintain a cumbersome appearance. I’ll be firing up a thread in the WIP forum sometime soon, so I’ll definitely have progress pics there

...or am I treading on rocky ground here?

I see what you did there. :laugh.:

More seriously, as long as it's consistent most opponents should be too put out by it. I guess the only concern might be to make sure they can't be confused for something else, like a Defiler (even when using a completely different codex).

Thanks for the vote of confidence GRC! I’m missing you guys in the DA forum, but this project has totally taken over

@Zuvassin: haha I totally forgot about that joke

@Appiah and Shandwen: I’m really digging those legs, especially the Konflict German Panzermech ones

So after trolling through bits stores and 3rd party companies the last few days, it’s looking like I’ll probably be going the scratch built route. I’m aiming for 8 legs, going for the whole arachnid approach.

Thanks again for all the input. I started this thread just to get a feel for what’s acceptable, and you guys are throwing me some truly awesome ideas!

I didn't think there were differences in rules between walkers and tanks now?

indeed there are not - but adding walker legs to a leman russ and using it as a leman russ wouldnt have conferred walker rules in 7th ed either

I don't get your point.

OP was worried about adding legs to a tank "because walker rules were so different". I'm pointing out that they are no differences. I don't see what 7th has to do with anything?

yeah thats me not reading the op fully...

i was trying to say that customising the appearance of a model doesn't change its rules

Yea it’s partially my fault guys, I’m still very unfamiliar with a lot of the new 8th edition rules. Between having kids, and my group falling apart, I haven’t played a game since early 7th. I hadn’t seen anything in this rule book about differences between walkers and tanks, but I assumed the datasheets covered those differences

If there really isn’t a difference this edition, then that makes things even better!

Yup.

In 7th ed, whether a tank had legs or not mattered.

Now, in 8th, it doesn't, and large models all generally behave the same, whether made of flesh or steel, and with legs or on tracks, or any combination thereof.
