Nharvey89
So in the drop of a book it's gone from my wolves winning against guard to guard now dominating with roughly the same army on both sides, planning on shifting around some units but want to hear what you guys think. How do we deal with soo much Dakka? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/340291-new-guard-vs-wolves/ Share on other sites
TheWolfLord
I'm assuming you were facing a lot of tanks but if possible what do you tend to face? Nharvey89
Bubble wrapped tanks, it's the sheer volume of fire power with all the rerolls and the extra fire power of the Russ, last few games he has bought a LOW. I generally bring a mix of fire power and assualt to try and alfa strike something key making it easier to get to his line's, having to switch to a more shooty force to try and ensure more stuff dies but even still I don't think we can match them in a straight up gun fight. wilkco
a good idea is to get your wulfen in close with a land raider/Flyer also deep strike in some shooty Termis, the shooty terminators should be able to remove the bubble wrap. Allowing your Wulfen to then get into CC with the tanks so they can not shoot anything.  Also get a Rune Priest and Njal in terminator armour to do smites and the +1 to hits on the laser tanks  also try to go for bigger squads of stuff so you have less to deploy meaning you get first turn Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/340291-new-guard-vs-wolves/#findComment-4907545 Share on other sites
Nharvey89
Do all of the above, rune priest cover bubble and an important tank -1, wulfen in storm wolf, win the drop war. People say worry about death guard, they havent given me too much trouble. This new guard though, just struggling with all the shots. In turn 1 in our last battle he took down 3 major units, even with storm shield saves. Thinking it's gunna be a case of bring more lass cannons and secure turn 1. Gherrick
It won't be much longer until the modified first turn rule becomes official, where instead of a guaranteed first turn, you just get +1 to the die roll. I've already been using it in my games, and it allows for much more list variance, since you can still go first even if you have a lot of units to deploy. I still feel GW made the first turn too strong of an impact on most games, even worse than 7e. Deep Striking Melta and Plasma can deal with more.  If you can't get past the bubblewrap to assault the tanks you need to change to a shootier approach.  The only other option is to quickly remove his bubblewrap so you can assault in turn 2. Once you get into assault with a tank army they are screwed as they can't fall back and shoot.  Try lots of Wolf Guard with Storm Bolters and/or bikes open up gaps. Fang_Guard23
I was thinking about this a while ago, I was thinking of using drop pods of either wolf guard and/or long fangs to establish a potential 2nd turn firing line to bring down the tanks first. cripple their most powerful and send in assault squads to clean them up Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/340291-new-guard-vs-wolves/#findComment-4908091 Share on other sites
Bulwyf
I use WG termies for this plus your own tanks. It kinda sucks with how strong shooting is in 8th. The best lists are frankly all vehicle/shooty lists and assault lists are just not that good against. You have to get lucky in your rolls and placement/terrain use.
