The Final Sanction - OOC thread

I was eyeing a tactical marine too; that said, if there will only be four marines I don't know if the team would benefit from variety to make it a little more flexible. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I'm happy to switch out for something with tech-use if you want to go for tactical.

Emphasis mine.

Wasn't sure if this particular character would be a go - I think someone else was eyeing a tactical/DA too.

I'm going tactical, but not true DA... rather my home brew that's I've been using for the better part of twenty years on the table top. Though spawned from the Dark Angles, they don't have a lot in common with the rest of the Legion Unforgiven.

Tyber's quick Bio:

Having been one of those in the breeding program, entry into the chapter was all but assured, all he had to do was face a full brother of the chapter in single combat, an event he often does not look back to as it was nothing but a reminder of what he had been, not where he was headed. His Claw Captain had seen something in him, made him his second shield not long after becoming a full brother of the Second Claw. His duties as second shield were to serve as counsel as well as provide a counter point to the second sword, whom was also a junior member of the retinue of the Second Claw Captain. Often how ever his duties revolved around fetching things that the First Shield required or standing quietly while the Captain with his First Shield and First Sword formulated a plan of attack.

The Second Claw of the Dragons of Caliban had been formed around small squads of brothers in Razor Backs that operate in close proximity to Predators. One of the quirks of the Second Claw, was they were the ones often seconded to the Death Watch when it came looking for members, as they were already used to working in squads of six brothers or less.

I'm posting this to try to ensure I get a place, though I am open as to the role Tarvus plays (which is why the biography is somewhat underdeveloped as it stands.) My original plan was for a Tactical Marine, but he could easily be an Assault Marine or a Devastator, which is why I've stated that he was in the First Company; that allows me to say he's either a Vanguard or a Sternguard if necessary.

I could also see him as an Apothecary, but I feel as though that's a little clichéd for a Castigator and I would like to move away from that.

Any thoughts?

Brother Tarvus

Watch-Brother Tarvus of the Castigators
qbkM2bO.png

Name: Tarvus

Chapter of Origin: CASTIGATORS
AGE: 134 (TERRAN STANDARD)

Rank/Specialisation: PENDING - RECORDS UNCLEAR

Brother Tarvus hails from the Castigators, a Chapter located within the Ultima Segmentum and tasked with defending the tumultuous area known as the Howling Stars. The Castigators' domains have endured the depredations of Xenos-breeds for millennia; both the Eldar Craftworld Kuraan-Bal and the Ork Empires of the Delvis Rifts have been long been enemies of the Chapter.

The Castigators are known to be intolerant and untrusting of those who wield psychic energies; it is said that the Chapter fields no psychic librarians within its ranks. This hatred has not been witnessed from Tarvus, and it is assumed that the Castigators send those warriors who can temper their disquietude with diplomacy to ensure the team can function appropriately.

Tarvus stands as a veteran of the Chapter's First Company. And yet, it was not always this way. As a fledgling warrior of the Chapter, he fought in the Belaxalar Xenocides, where Captain Caphius eradicated an entire alien civilisation to enable the Adeptus Mechanicus to mine their world. He has crossed swords with renegades and participated in purge-campaigns to ensure Ork Warlords cannot threaten the worlds of the Taurelian Expanse. As an officer aboard the Strike Cruiser Thrice-Blessed Sword, he was afforded the opportunity to understand the Astartes' ways of waging war from an entirely different perspective as the Castigators tried - and failed - to bring the Eldar to war.

Having served across the the Chapter in a variety of roles, his wisdom and guidance are widely respected. He is one of the few within the Castigators to be granted the right to wear the mighty Tactical Dreadnought Armour. It is thought that a Captaincy may well be in his future, and returning to his brethren as a veteran of the Deathwatch is sure to provide him with the experience necessary. (MORE DETAIL DEPENDENT ON CAREER PATH)

Tarvus has studied the Codex Astartes extensively; this has granted him a keen insight into the ways in which the Space Marines can wage war. It is his hope that service with the Deathwatch will provide him with the opportunity to experience the ways in which other Chapters fight, allowing him to master his newest challenge.

Seems like this as the "grim and dark" quite covered. I was tempted by Chacharadons (may be as a kind of librarian/ assault hybrid) but afraid this is all going tooo stony faced men with icy demeanor...same with BT, Raven Guard. Could see that work as a Lamenter of Flesh Teaser also if the group is in dire need of an Assault \ close combat type.

Of course, PBP is easier to role play the silent type characters as we can still communicate the inner workings in the narrative. Might go for a chapter with a more "positive outlook" as in SW or challenge me to something Like a WS or Sally.

Thumping through my books, I'm still sad that there are no official entries for the Mantis Warriors or the Executioners :(

So, here's where we are at the moment.

With only four players at the moment (Sun Reaver not having posted in the OOC, and I've not posted yet IC) we have a little lack of variety in the Kill-Team.

Anyone else reading this and thinking of playing? Anyone open to different roles?

Molotov, I'm there to back you up in CQB, it's why I picked the Squad mode ability I did as well as the class special I did so that I've got the ability to share the free half attack and half move (even if used to disengage form melee freely). Also the combat sheiks I've got gives me a little staying power too.... would really love to change my armour to Mk.IV though that +20 to fellowship tests with other marines is just awesome for my character... but AP 7/9 is-t so great....

In the end, some of this will depend on the decisions Dosjetka makes (and also if there are any NPC Marines in our team.)

If A.T. were amenable we could have him as a Devastator, Steel Company as Tactical and myself as Assault. That'd mean we were a relatively balanced team given our small numbers.

Dos - given this is buried in a sub-forum away from the eyes of most of the board, have you considered advertising further afield?

Since all my favorite Legions do not support the DeathWatch and my current time management is also a bit cramped, I am taking the lazy way out. Once you guys have your characters or at least the squad roles settled, I am offering to create a character to fill up the squad with what is most likely needed and work my way towards a chapter.

Unless it is an Ultramarine. There is a fine blue line I am unwilling to cross. ;)

Name: Sir Lucanus Nero

Chapter of Origin: Knights of the Raven

Age: 125 Years (Terran Standard)

Rank: Knight-Lexicanum

Sir Lucanus Nero comes from the Knights of the Raven chapter, a successor chapter of the Raven Guard located on the world of Coralax.  Like all Sons of Corax, the Knights of the Raven place a heavy emphasis on guerrilla and stealth tactics. Founded in the 38th Millennium, the Chapter is quite aloof, only communicating with fellow Imperial forces when necessary. Recently, the chapter engaged in open conflict against the Aurora Chapter. This bitter war was apparently ended by Marneus Calgar and a strike force of Ultramarines. In penance for shedding the blood of their fellow Space Marines, the chapter is currently embroiled in a hit and run campaign against Splinter-Fleets of Hive Fleet Kraken.

Upon joining the ranks of the Knights of the Raven, Nero quickly gained a penchant for killing in the darkness. During his inaugural campaign as a scout, he was able to infiltrate a heretical Governor's palace and personally assassinate him in his private chambers; thus ending the Swaco Rebellion. As a fully-fledged battle brother, Lucanus participated in the defense of the space station Knud-5, defeating an invading force of Orks 3 times their number. His most defining moment though, came at the battle of Valeem, where Nero and his squad fought a war in the shadows against a force of Striking Scorpions from Craftworld Alaitoc. Losing his fellow squad members and Sergeant Gauis, Nero vowed to kill the enemy Exarch or die trying. Tapping into his hate, the marine unconsciously tapped into something else as well. Unknowingly, Lucanus was able to cloak himself in the darkness and silence his presence. Using this newfound ability, he killed the remaining Xenos and even defeated the Exarch but was unable to kill him before he escaped through the Webway. Though Lucanus lost his fellow battle-brothers that day, he had gained a moniker: The Shade of Squad Gaius.

Shortly after, the Chapter's Librarians identified his abilities for they were and he joined the Librarius at an age much later than he should have. Upon attaining the rank of Knight-Lexicanum, Nero was attached to the 4th Company where he has become a valuable adviser and confidant to Knight-Captain Meridan. However, he does generally invoke the Captain's ire as he does have a tendency to take on valuable targets by himself and, avoid his responsibilities as a 'commander.' Still, he is widely respected and liked by his company. Privately, Nero enjoys the thought of being part of the ad-hoc squad that he and the Company Command are apart of.

As the campaign against the Tryanids continues and the chapter's losses tally even higher, the Knight-Lexicanum has volunteered to duty within the Deathwatch. Although loathe to leave his chapter, Nero believes he can enhance his already potent abilities in order to crush the Splinter-Fleets once and for all. Lucanus Nero will do anything to ensure that he can protect his fellow battle brothers and his newly founded place in his Knight-Captain's command squad. The Shade of Sqaud Gaius will be damned if he loses another squad of friends and battle-brothers.

So, here's where we are at the moment.

I don't mind fulfilling another role if necessary.

Looking forward to Dosjetka's post.

As Steel Company clearly has a good knowledge of Deathwatch I think that it makes a lot of sense for him to be the Tactical Marine.

Xin Ceithan's offer is awesome. Does it make sense for him to be an Apothecary?

To be fair, I've run one game of it with my local group a few years back... What I remember about it, was that Heavy Bolters are brutal for such a basic weapon (as in the are murder on most elite and master level targets), melee was murder on the guy charging, unless you could get the skills that let you make all of your attacks on the charge, two weapon wielding can cause a whole boat load of shenanigans, especially if you use a ranged in one hand and a melee in the other, one of them is going to eat -20 to hit.... but with out easy it is to stack +'s to hit for ranged attacks, might as well make your off hand the ranged weapon... And lastly, tactical marines are a bit of a joke at the start of an adventure, but with the right choices can be a very useful jack-of-all-trades.
