Surprised this hasn’t come up yet, so here’s a question for the Frater - what Regimental Doctrine would best represent the Tanith First & Only, AKA “Gaunt’s Ghosts”?

Couple of bits of info about them:

- They’re a Light Infantry regiment that focuses on stealth, reconnaissance and snipers (every trooper had a cameleoline cloak).

- As an army of scout snipers, they also had an elite Sniper division and Scout division.

- They lost the majority of their heavy armour & artillery during their founding.

- They all carry 30cm combat blades called “Straight Silvers”, which they used in combat with remarkable (if unorthodox) skill.

So... Infantry-centric is obvious. They favour the Long-Las (sniper rifle) backpack flamers (heavy flamers), and “tread-fethers” (missile launchers). They also fielded dedicated teams with autocannons. Vehicles might be best used in a seperate detachment, representing the Narmenians.

Now for a look at the different doctrines & stratagems:

- Cadian is a simple yet effective option that could easily be used to represent Tanith.

- Catachans are an odd one. The Strength buff could represent the Tanith’s use of their “Straight Silvers”, and the Leadership buff is quite apt, but the Vehicle boon is not very fluffy. They do seem to fit the stealth theme though.

- Valhallans are, quite simply, the antithesis of the Tanith. Waves of infantry and vehicles being thrown into the grinder is not how they operate.

- Vostroyans have got a very simple doctrine, and a stratagem that compliments them. They are very much in theme with the Tanith, much to my surprise.

- Armageddon has another doctrine that doesn’t fit the Tanith theme - transports. Pass.

- Tallarn was my initial pick when I first started mulling this over, but I don’t think they really work now. They obviously benefit vehicles more than anything else, which is not in theme.

- Militarum Tempestus is not going to work for a whole army, for obvious reasons.

- Mordian is another surprise choice. Easy to benefit from the buffs, and said buffs fit the theme pretty well.

So Cadian, Catachan, Vostroyan and Mordian are my pick. What do you all think?

I would say vostroyans to represent their superior training from being with guant through thick and thin. Though in theory....... You could do different detatchments with different regimental doctrines to represent the Original tanith and the Hive survivors.

As long as you are lead by a lord commy with the warlord trait to issue orders, I am happy!

I haven't had a Tanith army since 4th, but I was thinking about this too.

Tallarn seems the best fit, considering their ability to move and fire effectively, fall back and shoot warlord trait and the ability to set three units up in ambush. Taking the Dagger of Tu'Sakh lets a character and another unit (preferably Veterans) do the same again.

All together this really is the best analogy we get for the Ghost's style of warfare. Swift and stealthy, surprusing their foes, then falling back and doing it again. Personally I'd take a Lord Commissar (Gaunt), a few Company Commanders (representing Colbec, Rawne, Mkoll, etc) and focus on taking Veterans, with 'Tread Fether' teams as your fire support. Obviously take as few tanks as you can get away with, possiblty eeven just going full infantry. You can represent their camo cloaks with good use of the 'take cover' strategem too.

You just need to be a little creative with army construction

I was pondering this, as all my guardsmen are either Tanith models or Catachans with beards and camo-cloaks. Still waiting to get the Codex, so haven't got all the doctrines/stratagems etc in front of me. I thought Tallarn too, but it doesn't seem to add anything to the Tanith signature weapons: flamers are autohit while "longlas" and "tread-fethers"are heavy. Vostroyan would offer those more. The Catachan order is good for the flamers (Brostin and co). Mordian - well, lining your infantry up in base-to-base contact doesn't seem very Tanith in style (unless Daur's in charge!). Cadian? The improved accuracy is appropriate but the loss of mobility less so. Edited by Plasmablasts

Another vote for Tallarn. Sure, you dont gain anything on the snipers, and the tank order doesnt do much either, but the added mobility and outflanking potential make up for it. The only other choice that *might* work is Vostroya, if you wanted to enhance the sniper theme over the light infantry one.

I'm planning on going with the Tallarn doctrine for my Ghosts.

You get manuverability-7-12" a turn makes guardsmen surprisingly fast. You get to play up the stealth/outflanking aspect with up to five units appearing in surprising places.

And a Lord Commissar with the Blade of Conquest and the Master of Command warlord trait...there's Gaunt himself.

And if you take Leman Russ's alongside them, the ability to ignore hit penalties when moving is perfect for Narmenian allies...
