The explosion woke the boy up.

He was barely awake when his mother barged into his room.

He could not understand what she was saying, dazed as he was from being so suddenly woken up from deep sleep.

She grabbed him by the arm and dragged him out of bed.

The shouting and the explosions were close now.

They left the house running, and the boy looked down, he didn't have his boots on, and the the rough ground was hurting his feet.

"Mom, I don't have my boots"the boy said.

"I need to go back and look for your brother" she said, "don't stop until you reach the main road! Go!"

The boy looked back, the dark silhouette of his mother against the raging inferno that was approaching the farm.

He started running the best he could, alone and in the dark, the shadows had never looked so menacing.

On the boy went, without looking back, crying soflty into the night.

When the boy finnaly reached his destination , tired and with his feet hurting, he crossed the road and sat on the edge. Under him a densely bushed cliff was covered in darkness. Maybe a veichle would pass, but traffic was rare and far in-between in the mountains...

The boy waited...

The darkness was opressive, and looking for too long into it would create monsters, every sound a menace... The boy grabbed his knees trying to find some comfort in the cold night...

A sound caught his attention... He stood up scared, it was coming from under him. Something was coming trough the brushwood.

Then the boy heard a soft gutural laugh. Fear came again like a wave crashing down and he started shaking. He could not control it... He started backing slowly, tears in his eyes...

Claws were rasping in the wall... Something was climbig up...

His back hit the wall across the road. Panic had took over him, and tears ran down his cheeks, then he saw a claw over the ridge, then another, red glowing eyes appeared and a massive frame of a monster took form in the darkness...

Suddenly a flash of light around the corner and the sound of thunder!

The veichle had stopped, and after so long in the dark the headlights hurt the boy's eyes.

A door opened, and someone disembarked...

He was tall, slim, a cigar lit on the corner of his mouth making his eyes shine in the dark...

He took the boy into his arms, and without saying a word turned around and started moving towards the veichle.

The boy said nothing, he could not even if he wanted to... The boy looked at his saviour face. The peaked cap gave him a brooding appearance, his scruffy white beard, the deep lines on his face, and the dark bags under his blue eyes, a sinister look... But in that moment, the boy, for the first time in that night knew no fear...
