I have been doing some conversions with genestealer hybrids and testing out some different paint schemes. I haven't played for a couple of editions. I like the idea of desert troops or troops from the ash wastes. I have about 6 squads worth of infantry and a few chimeras.

At first I thought about the steel legion but Tallarn (fluff wise) is just cool.

Can I build an army around what I have so far?

What role would the infantry play? Should I get more chimeras to give them all a transport?

Sunspear, I've been running Tallarns for 17 years and I love them.

To answer your questions

1. Yes, 6 squads of infantry and some Chimeras is a superb core with which to start an IG army. The Tallarn regimental strategem on page 137 of our new IG codex and the Tallarn regimental doctrine on page 133 give us an incredible amount of mobility.

2. The infantry can play many roles: static firebase/objective holders, mobile firebase/objective holders, cheap screening chaff units, and assaulters/tarpitters. Experiment with how to use and equip your squads. I like to give my mobile foot squads plasma guns or flamers, power swords or power axes, and plasma pistols. I like to give my firebase squads get lascannons or bazookas, plasma guns, and bolters. But there are many other configurations as well.

3. No. In this edition, infantry are pretty mobile and Tallarn infantry are more mobile than any other regiment with our stratagems and doctrines so you don't really need Chimeras. But if you want to bring Chimeras you really only need 2 to 3 Chimeras (lately I've been using Hellhounds instead of dual heavy flamer Chimeras).

Also note that I've found outflanking rough riders (no longer in the codex but still usable because they are in the index), stormtroopers, and scout sentinels really synergize well with the fluid Tallarn style of warfare.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the Tallarn philosophy of battle! :)

Thanks tallarn commander, the detailed response helps a lot.

I want to play AM but I didn't want a static army. This will help me figure out what I need to buy. I've been playing since around 93 but got out of it a coupe of editions back and never played guard. I really like the new regiments. So many different ways to play the guard, ( they will always be imperial guard to me lol).

Tallarns doctrines and stratagems are new to me so it's going to take a bit to wrap my head around it I think

I've been playing my desert regiment as Tallarn and it's so much fun. I personally don't like playing static armies, I like aggressive play with an emphasis on encirclement and mobility. Tallarn are all about that.

My current list holds five units in reserve. Two Veteran Teams, a Company Commander, a Hellhound and a Devildog, but I can change it up on a game by game basis which makes them very flexible.

Being able to come on at certain points makes for a powerful alpha strike ability. I tend to hold the Infantry back until the main army and outflanking tanks wear them down and pull them forward, then come in behind the enemy lines and assassinate objective holders.

It was really frustrating for my opponents to deal with, because they were pulled in so many directions trying to deal with the surrounding threats. If they spread out to deny my outflanking, I just overwhelm isolated units. If they split in a compact manner, it means I can surround them very easily on and stifle their mobility.
