Charlo
Literally not read the thread as I'm going through the audiobook at the moment (so happy Audible got Black Library!) but the Brothers have just reached the giant Bone Graveyard thing at Davin :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/340551-ruinstorm-spoilers/page/4/#findComment-4947529 Share on other sites
Charlo
Okay finished it last night, so my thoughts! Overall a very good book. The beginning as others have said is a little shaky and mostly bolter-porn that can be tough to follow but is still pretty good as far as things go. I enjoyed the UM destoryers. Once the Primarch's all meet up via their various methods it gets much better though as they go on their foray through the ruinstorm. There is the big revelation about the Sanguinor that people have talked over in the book, which is really friggin' awesome: Very much enjoyed the Sanguinor seemingly sprouting wings while bathed in the warp portal while keeping the Daemon held down, a perfect way to set him up for 40k and anything else they might do in the rest of the Heresy. The Lion fell a little flat for me, but I really enjoyed him in Angel's of Caliban. He was good here and his character is showing some growth (by the end the three brothers really are acting like brothers) but he just didn't have as many cool moments. DA needed some more cool unit call-outs in general (would've been nice to see some of the Fire/ Stormwing as we don't know much yet!) Guilliman was great. He's best depiction yet I think. His flaws are really on show and he knows it. He is over analyzing everything and almost gives in to some serious temptation a few times during the story, but manages to keep cool and be a powerful advisory for his brothers. Sanguinius was obviously incredible. He's really going through a transformation over the course of the story and coming to terms with how he'll die on Terra at the apex of the siege. The trials that the daemonic foes put him through are crazy and he fights against them spectacularly but realistically with plenty of doubt and self-sacrifice. I think my favourite parts of the book are: The main Daemon's voice and mocking Sanguinius, as well as all the daemonic chanting. Plus the fact he's undivided! Guilliman's self reflection and wondering if he should use the daemon blades. The ending conversation where The Lion and Guilliman agree to not reach Terra so that Sanguinius can. I'm hoping we get some amazing fights out of them blowing up fortress worlds' & blockading Horus' advance to Terra respectively - especially with the hints that "some of their brothers" will no dobut not ignore their advance. The final conversation between Kurze and Sanguinius. I was fully expecting Sanguinius to say to Kurze that he might find a place among the loyalists as a weapon on Terra as repentance, but no. Instead he's a stone cold and really with him by putting his prophecy to the test by FIRINGHIM INTO SPACE IN A STASIS COFFIN WHILE SCREAMING!!! Cannot wait to see how/ when/ if we'll see Konrad again. Oh and I'm also going to be really bummed if Sanguinius doesn't have the Spear and Sword for his FW model Debut - I want that spear to turn some traitors to ash with. Kasper_Hawser
I wonder where the spear came from. I didn't read any mention of it in Fear to Tread. It's like it popped out of nowhere when I saw the Ruinstorm cover.
