Which Baneblade variant?

Recommended Posts

I had an idea for a fluffy army that involves a Baneblade variant of some kind.

Basically I want to take a Catachan Patrol detachment as an "infantry escort" for a super heavy tank, and ally it with some of my Raven Guard (because Straken and Shrike have worked together in the lore).

My dilemma is I'm not sure which variant to go with. I'm currently leaning towards the Hellhammer, but I don't know much about the various types in order to make an informed decision.

Any suggestions?

There's also this topic that covers bits, but it depends on what you need as there are many variants with different roles. As Tirak says the Shadowsword is quite nasty with the main cannon, but ideally needs suitably valuable and tough targets to get the most from. When in doubt I take the "standard" Baneblade, as it's a super sized Russ and can cover most requirements as more of a generalist.

I would say look for a couple of the great tutorials at magnets, you can then have every varient whenever you like to use the, :)

Given you seem to be looking at doing a fluff list, comp isnt really a major need for you, if you ever decide to go to a tourny or something, shadowsword is likely your best bet simply for wiping enemy super vehicles or mega characters out as the best weapon in the guard armoury for eliminating a single/small squad of units (remember, its 3d3 shots, meaning it on average has 6 shots and no less than 3 pending damage and model wounds. You could in theory wipe terminator squads for example though ofcourse, this is if you have no other targets suitable at that time).

I'm looking at the Hellhammer for versatility. Potential for 54 damage with rhe main gun, and it's 3d6 with a reroll for being Catachan.

I actually fought a Shadowsword over the weekend. It wiped my untouched Fire Raptor off the table with one shot.

I regularly play against a hellhammer. It is a brutal piece of equipment.

There’s a Catachan-specific Hellhammer from one of the Apocalypse books:

Traitor's Bane - A Hellhammer scavenged by the 183rd Catachan regiment to aid in their guerrilla war against the forces of Chaos during the latter's occupation of Pythos. Refitted and upgraded by the Jokaero K'cee, this Hellhammer is unique in the sense that it has been fitted with extra external armor and the ability to release electrical surges throughout it's outer armor. It has also been upgraded so that it can reach a speed of 200 mph without the crew noticing the incredible speed's effects. Playing a pivotal role in both the defense of different strongholds and offense in the reconquest of Pythos. Throughout the campaign it has served as the mobile HQ of Colonel "Death" Strike. Earning it's name from it's numerous kills and the fear it induced in the many forces of Chaos plaguing the Deathworld Pythos.

Given a standard Hellhammer has a top speed of 15.5 mph, it’s a bit of a stretch to get one that goes 200. But who cares - it’s awesome!

Just looked it up - it’s from Warzone: Pandorax. I have a really low quality photo of it if you want me to PM it to you.

Probably meant to be 20mph then, but the main attraction of a Baneblade (or variant) is the bristling array of guns (and sometimes space for boots) the movement speed is likely not even a secondary concern :laugh.:

I've been looking at the "less popular" choices, and I'm also thinking that the Tremor Cannon is worth a gander. Slowing a target could be really useful especially as you're likely to be targeting the biggest and baddest enemy unit with such a gun anyway.

If the enemy relies on moving up behind a screen (like DG do with their poxwalkers) you can smack them with the tremor cannon and slow down or expose their whole army.

I buyit, because Jokaero.

It does sound cool. But I came up with an idea of my own while working. A Hellhammer named Devil's Due.
