Came up with a premise for a fluffy list that is a little more competitive.

A detachment of Catachans are escorting the Hellhammer Devil's Due to where it is needed on the front line. Unfortunately, they are ambushed and only the Hellhammer itself survives, as the ambushers had nothing that could penetrate its hull.

Chapter Master Shrike is in overall command of the operation and knows how crucial the Devil's Due is to bringing the enemy's walls down for a frontal assault (or in the Raven Guard's case, to let them inside the city they are holed up in to do what they do best). Knowing how important the only superheavy tank in the area is to the success of the operation, Shrike decides to personally escort it with a hand picked detachment of his own men.

I even had a neat idea on how to model the Hellhammer. Since the Raven Guard are escorting it, I'm going to put a Space Marine in the turret pistol-gripping a storm bolter to represent the tank's pintle-mounted storm bolter. The story there is the Marine was badly wounded and lost a leg, an eye, and most of the use of one hand. His eye was hurriedly replaced with a bionic, but it was a field surgery and the eye is glitching (which explains why he's shooting at 4+ instead of 3+). Refusing to be taken out of the fight, the Marine volunteers to man the Hellhammer's storm bolter, but the mount was destroyed when the gunner was killed in the ambush. So he simply picks up the storm bolter in his one good hand and fires it that way. I'm planning on using Korvydae's head for this guy, as it has the look of a guy who has been through hell and refuses to quit.

The Hellhammer's name is a reference to the Catachan Devil, rather than the religious devil, which they know nothing about.

The Devil has such a reputation on Catachan that the Hellhammer's main cannon is not considered overkill when encountering one. Thus, the Devils on Catachan are Due to be eradicated by a massive tank

Why a hellhammer out of curiosity.  Shadowsword seems more distructive and its cheaper?

My biggest problem is with large horde units. The Hellhammer's main gun is 3d6 shots at S10, with a reroll for being Catachan. It will do a better job at deleting larger units and I won't feel so much like I wasted a shot by using a Shadowsword for the same thing. Sure, the Shadowsword wounds pretty much everything on a 2+, but the Hellhammer is doing it on a 3+ and has twice the potential shots to do it with.

On tougher units, like Magnus, volume of fire will force him to make more saves. With a 3+ invuln that rerolls 1s, he's not going to fail many saves. Forcing more of them gives me a better chance to get some damage through. 5 or 6 S16 shots doesn't mean much if he tanks all of them with that ridiculous save. I say this because I watched Magnus tank everything a Shadowsword threw at him this past weekend without a scratch.

The other, fluffy, reason is that the Hellhammer just feels more like it would be something the Catachans would use. A Shadowsword feels more Cadian or Armageddon.

Thoughts on a Stormlord with 4 Twin Heavy Flamer Sponsons?

That will kill brimstone/conscript spam for days - the biggest issue is you can't use the transport space (unless you add a small detachment of IG to stuff into it - like Heavy Weapon teams shooting from the inside of it   )

I considered it. The issue there is affording the tank itself is going to be enough of an issue that getting several squads of Guardsmen to put in it would stretch my budget to the breaking point. I considered mortar teams so I wouldn't need LOS.

And a 10" movement tank with heavy flamers isn't hard to avoid. On most battlefields it is big enough to be limited in where it can go.

Guard LoWs don't gain regiment rules in a LoW Aux detachment; it has to be a supe rheavy deetachment or supremem command if you want to benefit from regiment rules. Easiest way is to take a Supreme with 2 primaris Psykers for the powers they can cast on the hellhammer and a command russ, or another psyker for points.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't have the Codex yet, so I was going by what Battlescribe could tell me.

Here's a list that should be a little better.

Ahh missed it was looking at the end of the list for it

Id put twin heavy flamers on instead

That way when it gets assaulted it can 4D6 auto hit assailants whilst still firing its main weapons at everything else. No need to fallback unless you really need too

I'm comfortable with the heavy bolters. Should whittle the assaulters in overwatch.

3d6 shots from the main cannon, 6 heavy bolters, 2 lascannons, d3 from the Demolisher.

Pkus the Primaris Psykers will be hanging out near the tank, as well as the Enginseer.
