As I have come up and played with several different lists one unit keeps popping up as "MVP of the game" for my DG: the humble bloat drone.

The model is such a great combination of things. It can be anti horde with the splitters. It can take down vehicles with heavy blight launcher. It can be a nightmare in CC with the fleshmower. Oh, it flies too. So you can annoy and harass the enemy all game long with them.

Our army has too many overcost units but the bloat drone for the points and value is simply unmatched. At this point I can't really imagine not taking at least two in a list.

I am curious if you guys have had similar experiences with the bloat drone so far.

Completely agree. Except, I'd argue it's not our best unit but tied with the Plagueburst Crawler. If you mathhammer it the Plagueburst crawler, with a chaos lord, ends up doing more damage than a Predator while having nearly the survivability of a Land Raider. Oh, and it's less than half the cost of a land raider.

I often use 2 of them, always running the stock spewers. I have managed to gun down charging C'tan shards, melting them in a barrage of corrosive pus. They are fast, resilient, and dangerously versatile. Infantry die in droves, and they are good at tying up shooty foes and killing assaulting troops in overwatch.

Tried 3 this weekend. 2 with the spitters and 1 with the fleshmower. They are awesome. With lucky rolls one took fire from a missile broadside, 3 stealth suits, ghostkeel and a commander and lost 4 wounds. The fleshmower took out a commander and a 3 crisis suit unit. I know tau isn’t the best at cc but he made his points back. I will definitely be taking 3 every game. Cool looking unit too

I feel with Eldar coming out that our focus will shift to these. Eldar will be sniping out characters, so we will end up shifting away from character buffing hordes to blight drones, haulers, and monsters.

Which would hurt you against Lascannon spamming lists in return.

The shifting meta will be very interesting to watch in future. :D Oh and btw. AdMech already have pretty strong Sniper units as well with the Skitarii Rangers (Heavy1 72" S7 AP-2 D1d3, up to 3 per unit).

I have found that it is nearly impossible to build a true TAC list given the number of variables that list design must account for. I tend to build my lists around being really good at a few things and accept the fact that there will be bad match ups from time to time.

I do agree though that the bloat drones are one of DG's strongest units. With support from a DP, they are really dangerous.

Seriously. Go check out tabletoptactics.tv. They have really good discussions about this in their tactica videos and batreps. Death Guard are amazingly versatile. I'm working on a melee DG list right now. Super excited!

How useful are you finding the heavy blight launcher, those of you who use it? I have a trio of drones with spitters right now, and I'm very tempted to build some of my next batch with launchers, but that's as much because I like the model as anything else. I'm a bit hesitant about comitting to it, since everywhere in my area uses points, and paying for a weapon that only hits on 4s when the standard drone has a powerful autohit armament doesn't seem like a great plan. Is the range and AP worth it? If you run these, how do they perform?

I have three drones (only two painted),  three spitters and then one of each other that I haven't built yet.

I think they are great, fast, tough and can dish out some hurt (when they get close enough).  Not tried the launcher yet, but I am looking forward to giving it a go along with the flesh mower...just looks awesome.  I usually run my prince with them (with the sup plate) and they do draw fire.  Usually deploy away from Morty so enemy has to decide what is going to hit their lines first...

I have been considering the Bloat Drone versus the Plague Crawler, mainly because while I really like how the Plague Crawler looks, I don't have any and I have 2 bloat drones.  The drones are 2 points more (with plgauespitters) compared to a kitted out crawlwer.  While they do fill different roles, them being the same price point has me thinking.  On paper I really like the drone, because it's super fast moving, the plague spitters seem really good (no comment on the heavy blight launcher or fleshmower, although personally I think the heavy launcher isn't that great and the Fleshmower is only good f you're taking like a handful of them), and being able to jump into combat with something, then fall back the next turn and still fire is pretty huge.

I want to start using them more, because they really seem like a great choice.

I used 3 of them in my first 2000 point game the other day and the way it worked out was I had 3 of them move about 5 inches from a squad of primaris hellblasters and I had a plaguecaster behind them and casted gift of contagion and on the chart got -1 toughness so I ended up doing 6d6 shots that auto hit with the plaguespitters and they wounded on 2+ as a plague weapon rerolling the 1s so after shooting I had 22 wounds on a squad of hellblasters...it was a lot of fun
