So, I love Rubric Marines as an idea, however I'm not a big fan of their models. Something about them to me just looks off. I know quite a few people here over time have been arguing about sizes etc, and I realised I love Primaris models just because of how well proportioned they are. I got a weird idea to combine Primaris Marines and Rubric Marines. I'm not a big converter, I've never even used Green Stuff so this is literally minimal work input, I just wanted to see what people think. There are two pictures as follows, please give constructive criticism and your opinions!

So, the one on the left is obviously the Rubric Marine combined with Primaris Marine. In my opinion it looks way more proportionate and dynamic. This is literally minimal work again. I am looking to do something with the bolter (to make it more tzeentchy) but I am unsure as of yet. On the right is obviously a regular rubric marine. Height wise they are roughly the same, but the proportions and the dynamic of the model makes for a huge difference imo. (Even though the Primaris stance isn't one of my favourite it still looks better to me).

I have another picture I will put a a link to here:

Just a comparison between the Rubric Marine (left), a Primaris Rubric marine (middle) and just a regular marine on the right.

So.. What do you think? :)

Hmm kind of an interesting idea, but I see some issues. First, WYSIWYG rubricae don't have those special nifty bolt rifles, they have inferno bolters. Second, rubricae do not have dynamic stances. They stand autonomously, then march when commanded, and strike with melee if anything comes close. That's about it. They don't learn over, duck, or look around. Third, Thousand Sons are a legion known for stylized iconography, artistic flair, and sorcerous runes. The primaris models lack all of that. Obviously model what you like, but via fluff it seems a little lacking.

I like the idea of using primaris dudes, and the head and shoulder pads seem to fit well enough, just feels a little plain for them though. Compare the head and pad then the rest of him is kinda plain. Maybe if you can find some of the edging and awesome trim goodies of the rubric guys into the primaris dude that'd be stellar. You don't have to it all over the model like his predecessor but incorporate it in there someplaces like the greaves. I wouldn't add any of the ribbing just the trim and you should be sitting pretty.

nice idea, the Rubrics are among the tallest of the marine models anyway (you can see there is not a lot of difference). add a tabard and it will look way better :-)

the only issue you might have is your power armoured guys will be the same size or bigger than the Scarab Occult terminators! (although those helmets work quite well with the Primaris bodies too)

Honestly I'd never put the Primaris side by side with the Rubrics before this and I was so genuinely surprised they were similar sizes. The Rubrics in my head didn't seem to be anywhere near as tall as the Primaris marines at all.

@Bozo, the wysiwyg is potentially an issue yes, I play in a very small group of good friends so it's something I can explain to them for sure, I will have to think of the effect it has on others. I understand from the fluff perspective they are 'static' for a reason, that's not the reason I dislike the normal models.  I have a rough idea to paint them in preheresy colours and go back to their roots maybe.

@Ravyn I'm looking for something to add for sure to tie them in better back to the Rubrics. I have an idea to paint 'runes' onto the flat parts. I feel the legs are OK due to the 'rim' around the kneepad looking kinda 'stylish' but you're right about the greaves needing something. I'm not too sure what to add just yet but I also need to figure out a colour scheme too. Whether I'm going with a preheresy look of the crimson or their modern colours I'm unsure.

@tichinde adding tabards would be cool, I've been trying to figure out the best way to do it is all right now. You're right about the size issues. Luckily as said above they aren't much taller than regular rubrics so I'm hoping they won't make the termies seem too small. Though I should probably actually put them side by side and have a look as I do indeed like SOT's.

I know Rubrics aren't meant to be dynamic due to their fluff, however seeing this 'much more dynamic' rubric marine is really awesome in my eyes so I'm hoping to make it fit in a lot better now. Chaos to me is all about these little variations and 'conversions'. I know these changes might not be much to other people but they mean a lot to me!

You know, the runes idea would work pretty well, maybe add the loin cloth as well. That should cover the bases pretty good. For colors whilst the red looks great the blue is very nice with the gold. Might be after 10 years of painting blood angels I'm starting to hate that color now but oh well. OH! How about a nice candy blue pearl or metallic? Humbrol and Tamiya has some pretty nice candy type paints for that. Also, not sure if you have an airbrush or your skill level Alclad II paints are very very nice for getting those finishes, but require an airbrush and a moderate skill level with it to get them right, can't be used with a brush effectively. Just some options.

I do really like the blue with gold and I think it might be an important idea to make them more obvious from a distance that they are still Rubric marines. I haven't ever used paints other than Humbrol or Tamiya and I know sometimes they require special steps etc. I haven't really ventured much away from GW typical stuff etc. I've never used an airbrush either but I really am eager to try to be honest.

Funny you should mention a pre-heresy colour scheme (and tabards) for Primaris,  I had a similar idea a while back:

I haven't gone full "Rubric" with mine as I wanted them to represent a Loyalist (initially) force created by Cawl as an experiment. Hopefully they will show you what Primaris Rubrics could look like in red/gold with tabards :-)

Not to hijack the thread too much but I used the Forgeworld principle of painting a clear red over a metallic base. in this case, Black Primer-Retributor spray-Tamiya Metallic red spray-Tamiya clear red. I put a detailed tutorial together here:

on a related note, somewhere in the depths of my WIP thread I tried the same I idea using blue/gold on a Rubric/Sorcerer but I need to try the lighter metallic blue and try and avoid it turning out too much like Alpha Legion.

That red looks pretty nice! I have some blue spray I'm going to do a few trial and errors with this first primaris marine from the picture and see what happens, I'm not a great painter so unsure as to how this will come out but we will see!
