Gaunt's Ghosts is far and away the best Imperial Guard series, as well as my favourite Black Library series as a whole. It's a regiment 'unique' to the series however, but you can't go wrong with 'em if you're not set on Cadians/Catachans.

Cadian Blood is solid. Fighting against an outbreak of the Plague Zombie virus.

I've heard mixed things about Cadia Stands.

There's a couple of books about Straken, but I've neither read 'em nor heard much about them.

Ciaphas Cain series is good if you like Valhallans.  Tallarn is cool if you like the bespoke regiment.  For Guard in general, Gaunt's Ghosts is OFC an amazing series, and it just keeps getting better (IMO).  And, as always, Storm of Iron is an awesome choice if you want to see the full picture of Imperial vs. Chaos warfare, and one of the coolest Guardsmen of all time, Julius Hawke  :)

I quite liked Baneblade, pretty decent read. Also Helsreach is very good, while it focuses on the Black Templars, half of the book is about humans and Guard feature very prominently. In the typical ADB way, characters are very fleshed out.

Heck a scene in which dock workers are conscripted to repel an Ork waterborne invasion is my inspiration for Conscripts in currently putting together.

Audiobook is also very good.

I recommend Gunheads (2009) by Steve Parker. It's a fun read.  The book follows a Cadian Vanquisher crew that participates in an IG mission on an ork world. The mission is to drop in, set up a base camp, find Commissar Yorick's Baneblade, and then leave before the orks can mass their forces. As you might imagine, things don't go as planned.  I really like the sense of camraderie that exists among the tankers and I really enjoyed seeing a large combined arms Cadian force operate in a hostile environment. As an aside, I like how this book really makes the Adeptus Mechanicus out to be manipulative bastards. This book can also be found in the larger Black Library omnibus book, Hammer of the Emperor (2011).

I’m reading Gaunt’s Ghosts at the moment (for the first time - I’m a bit late to the party). Just finished Necropolis, and I must admit that they are very good! If they keep getting better, then it’s going to be a wild ride! :)

The Horus Heresy novella, Tallarn: Executioner had some good tank battles from the perspective of the Imperial Army/PDF.
