General Strike
I've decided to wait for all the codices before playing around with my imperial army, and my S.O. suggested that I finally start the xenos army that I've been talking about for a year or more. I've narrowed it down to Harlies or Nids, and just wanted to get some pre-purchase advice. I want to a big monster kaiju themed army, where should I start for that? Which troop choice is prime? I like the little melee gribblies myself. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/340991-interested-playercollector/ Share on other sites
Aothaine
The codex could change this, but are you building for competitive? If you are then you will most likely want the Gaunts for the little bugs. They are cheap and can do some decent damage in melee and in shooting with their fleshborers. For the big guys you can almost select anything you want. You will generally want 2-3 Fly-rants for HQ, 1-2 Tervigons as well are good Mawlocs and Exocrines are fairly decent right now and Harpies and Hive Crones are good for those first turn assaults to tie up your opponents lines. Xenith
Do you want a Kaiju army or a small gribbly horde? Both are valid. Why not both. Hormies and stealers popping up from trygon tunnels. General Strike
I want a Kaiju army, but know the value of cheap ob sec troops and bodies this edition. I want to focus on giant monsters, but have probably 30 or so gribble monsters for grabbing objectives and plugging holes in lines. I'm not planning for competitive, but we have a few guard players in my area who think 8-12 lascannons isn't over the top. Disciple of Caliban Sgt
From what I see so far two units of genestealers. Hormi's and trygons (plus Ravenors because I like them) is going to be my flavor I think. Probably sprinkle in carnifex with Old One Eye for giggles. I like melee for the Tyranids. Shooting is doable but man they are "hungry!" they need to be eating not shooting stuff then eating it. Anyway good luck I would say check Behemoth for the reroll charges rumor going around. Should help if you plan that way plus monsters get bonus stuff from Behemoth I believe (could be wrong so don't shoot me if I am.) dwez
One thing to consider is price - £ or $. The older monsters are generally cheaper - Carnifex, Trygon/Trygon Prime/Mawloc and Tervigon/Tyrannofex are all great bang for your buck. Carnifex can be picked up 2nd hand cheap, cheap. Tervigon/Tyrannofex are huge models and good value while the Trygon package gives you a lot of options game wise. Exocrine/Haruspex and Toxicrene/Maleceptor are still interesting options in the game but they seem to cost more and you end up with smaller monsters. Harpy/Crone are also quite expensive.Lets not forget Hive Tyrants which are great value and Tyrannocytes which are HUGE an potentially worth getting for the deployment shenanigans. Xenith
Yup. I think a bio acid TFex jumping out of a tyrannocyte would be fun and cause your opponent a headache. They have to deal with it or the firepower doubles next turn, doesn't care about hit roll degredation. Xenith
Looks good, could maybe do with more shooting, what's going in the tyrannocyte? Couple of list building things: Every model in the unit has to get adrenal glands - the way it's written it looks like you're only giving our to one model. Bonesword/scytals combo is a waste as the talons will never be used. I'd go deathspitter/devourer + boneswords or claws. Or double scytals if you want them cheap. Get adrenaline glands on the tyrant and gaunts. Bukimimaru
That list looks fun as hell. Fluffy, wacky and not full of cheesy nonsense. I might suggest you take a second look at including a Tyranid Prime in your list. With that many Warriors you are missing out on a substantial amount of free buffs if you don't include a Prime. If the Carnifexes are there to be shooty shooty, you might want to look at giving them the awesome Twin Devourers. They don't have as much high-strength output, but your Tyranofexes should already have that covered. With a pair of Fexes running with the devourers, you have enough infantry / bubblewrap shredding power to let your Horms get in and surround the juicer high-priority targets, trying them up and grinding them down before Old One Eye can catch up and really make a mess of them. General Strike
Alright, switched the Carnifexes to twin devourers, made a second battalion detachment for the Tyranid Prime and Hive Tyrant with one 10x hormagaunt squad and two 20x hormagaunt squads. Xenith
Whatever looks the coolest. In terms of powerful/silly units: leman russes; Chimeras full of purestrains; maguses.
