Combating Smite through Sacrifice

As Black Templars, our prosecution of the foul witch is tireless and never ending.

We've had the smite conversation before and we all have our own ways of dealing with them. Of course, it's no secret that the best smite counter is a Culexus assassin being the closest model. We've discussed ways to counter it through positioning and allies, but what about through efficiency and sacrifice? The blood of martyrs is the seed of the Imperium.

 

I've made a list of some of the best selections in our faction through calculating points per wound (ppw).

 

Infantry

1. Cenobite Servitors, 6 ppw

2. Intercessors, 10 ppw

3. Neophytes (Scouts), 11 ppw

4. Honor Guard (with Power Sword), 12.5 ppw

5. Initiates, 13 ppw

 

Infantry are a good way to counter Smites because they are often moving closer, especially if they are outfitted for close combat. Intercessors really come out ahead here, being troops with decent damage output as well. Neophytes and Honor Guard are a very viable choice here and seem to be designed as sacrificial units.

 

Vehicles

1. Rhino, 6.5 ppw

2. Tarantula Sentry Gun, 6.75 ppw

3. Hunter/Razorback/Whirlwind, 8.1-9.9 ppw

4. Land Speeder (Heavy Bolter) 13.3 ppw

5. Hellfire Dreadnought (assault cannon/missile launcher), 14.5 ppw

 

As you can see, we have some great selections from our vehicles as well which can easily be moved up quickly with their high movement values. You also have the added bonus of the Armour of Contempt strategem to help block some of the mortal wounds.

 

Fortifications

1. Imperial Bunker, 8.3 ppw

2. Imperial Bastion, 9.6 ppw

 

Fortifications get an honorable mention, although them being immobile limits their effectiveness in countering smite.
