Just curious how you guys have done against Orks?

I have a game tonight, and I'm not sure who my opponent is but it's stating to look like Orks by the way this is shaping up (schedules, etc).

The thing is he's notorious for bringing those 160-180 Ork lists, and I've really only done 'well' against it with Ultra and that was no-holds barred, Guilliman style.

If I take Grey Knights into this one I'm actually worried about the trucks and the walker thing (Not the stompa, that thing is not very good... the smaller walker that carries dudes).

He sometimes takes spam, but as I mentioned he like to throw everyone for a loop once in a while and take a ton of cheap trucks, backed by some cheap walkers. He still can get a wide range of figs on the table with this list.

Any experiences?

No one i know plays orcs. :sad.:

I'd assume we'd have any easy time with them. Taking them off the board in droves with stormbolters.

Well I used to in 7th but they are pretty nasty now... probably the best Index army left. I used to be able to bat them down and watch them run. now they have great psychics, can't be broken.... 30 man mobs going first is no joke now. I've struggled against them with anything but 'upper' teir type stuff.

With Orks I would suggest trying to deny a flank. If he blankets the board with his models try and deploy on the other side of the table with your slower units. This way you can focus on half of his forces with your entire force. What are you thinking about running?

Honestly, just the normal stuff, but some of it I haven't used so I want to experiment a bit too... Voldus for instance. But a GMNDK, NDK, 3 Strikes,  3-4 Paladins, Apoth, Draigo (in another detachment with the 3 heavies)... 2 of the Purgation squads (I still think they're under rated a bit). 2 Razorbacks.

Kind of boring? Perhaps, but I still think most codexes are down to 1-2 lists.

I would say if you play razorback you could use them to block some choke points or slow the orks giving you some turns of extra shooting. Also I would not deepstrike into them, but rather wait and get as much space as humanly possible. And if you know one of your unit is gonna die let it charge for some more kills. If he doesn' have a let of anti vehicle shooting I would bring a dakka ravens for sure or even a land raider crusader if you are feeling fancy. Also a good trick could be playing interceptors. You deploy in one zone and start shooting with them and before he comes too close you shunt away effectively divinding is force. Another trick I think may be shunting a 10 many squad up to 9, then shooting your 40 shoots and then using then stratagem to shunt back to safety. Also I would not bring purgation squads, but rather razorbacks with assault cannons to wound on 3 instead of 4. These are my 2 cents :) Edited by Zombs

Try to avoid close combat and deal as much shooting damage as you can. If you feel fancy you can try Crowe with Hammerhand, a Brother-Captain and some purifiers. Purge soul can also help destroy some vehicles. Purgation squads are not entirely garbage as they can help take down Nobz and they provide a better shots per turn ratio if they don't move, and you don't want to move a lot since letting them come it's preferable.

Played Orks at an ITC event recently. Was running something along the lines of

- x2 GMNDK w/ Psilencer/Psicannon/Teleporter & GoI
- x4 Strike Squads w/ 5 bodies/Hammer & GoI
- x4 Laser Razors
- Storm Raven w/ Assault/MM/Hurricane/Missiles
- Dreadknight w/ Psilencer/Teleporter & GoI to fill a point gap I didn't want to add an Apoth to.

This was also my 4th game in 8th, 4th game with Grey Knights, and 4th game since 5th Edition... So playing hordes of boys actually worked out well for me. With Gate on everything I was able to stay out of assault range with my Strikes while throwing Storm Bolters at him all the time. After his Rokkit filled Wagon was destroyed I was able to lock up some boys with Laser Razors until the Dreadknights could get into position, which happened AFTER I managed to kite 60 boys, some Commandos and Ghaz away from the fray just to teleport to the other side of the board...

I mean, we tied on points and I only killed 4 units (2 characters, wagon, rokkits) but I shredded a good 100 boys.
