I love my Centurions. They're gorgeous models in my opinion, and painting them up has been an absolute blast. I'm certain that I've probably grabbed myself a bit of a reputation defending them in several other topics where they've come up. I've used them a lot in 8th and they've done me very very well. I include them mostly just because I love the models as said, but they hold their own and they earn their points back near every game.

However, as I start to build my Space Marines towards a more visually-complete army, I've had what I put on the table slightly dictated by what I can 'trick out' in order to complete a full image. LED lighting, digital wound counter, some servo motors on turrets if I can get it to work right, etc. Which has me staring at the Centurions - as they can take none of them.

So I'm waffling back and forth. Love the Centurions. But for the price of Las-Cents I can grab two Lascannon-toting Predator tanks which I can tech the living :censored: out of. Worth it? Do the Centurions hold their own enough in the killy/resilience ratio to keep them anyway? Should I let the coolness factor overrule my personal taste? Are there other units that would fit better that could fit some tech fun? Replace the Cents with Devastators and then fit some Whirlwinds?

Need some Brotherly opinion.

Some context - I'm running a vehicle-focused Raven Guard army. Typically play at 1500 points in my meta, which includes two Stormtalons and two Dreadnoughts with the single squad of Centurion Devastators. At 2k I add a Stormraven. The Dreads and Cents usually hold the long range game while the footsoldiers press a second flank and the flyers harass a third flank. If Land Seeders were useful anymore, I'd bring 3 of them.

Want to win games?  Preds or lascannon razorbacks.  Want to be the cool guy that somehow wins every now and then with centurions? Bring an ancient with Banner of the Emperor Ascendant.  More shooting!

Well, dev cents are at least a worthy target for your apothecary. They might die quicker than predators, but 1+ armour (in cover), 3W and apothecary could make them potentially pretty tough, especially against the primaris lawnmowers (aka autocannons).

I'm tempted to use my box of cents, but haven't come around to that yet. Maybe they drop in points when the Chapter Approved book comes out, and become worth their points again.

I got Cents before the Codex and have not built them because ... Other projects. BUT, I am going to build them regardless to cost or value because they are cool.

So, in my humble opinion, SG has the thinking right. For my part, I don't care to win. I care more to play with the army I love, and that will be fun enough. If the opponent is cool, then I'll have more fun. If I win, then I'll have that much more fun.

Your opinion is wrong and you should feel bad for having it.

I can hardly wait for Primaris Centurions that put on their centurion suit before climbing into an even bigger suit... which then gets into a Primaris Centurion Dreadnought.  That would be epic.  It would of course cost like 800 points and have 3 lascannons with toughness 6 and 2" movement.

Don't forget the -2+ armor save

Exactly... Yo Dawg...

Personally I don't care for the aesthetics of the models. I also don't think they fit the RG very well. I understand the RG have access to and use them when appropriate but I feel those times would be few and far between.

The problem is the way the tabletop needs to work.  If we went fluffy we would probably see a combination of what we currently use and a lot of the stuff in the horus heresy rule books.  Are you telling me that only the space wolves send actual trained marines to perform recon roles as scouts.  Cents would be used to breach structures etc. It just does not translate well to the table

I'd say the devastator variant is quite fluffy for Raptors, which is why I intended to build a sqaud for AoP. The relic stuff is gone, so they have to make due with new stuff, instead of fielding entire terminator companies. Dev cents provide considerable fire support, comparable to predator tanks, but more mobile in tough terrain. And last but not least, centurion suits are smaller. Taken apart, they nicely fit within a shipping container or drop pod, and can enter the target area unnoticed, unlike a full tank squadron. In case of emergency, the marines drop out of the suits and go to ground, without losing irreplacable wargear.

The aesthetics can be fixed. My main gripe with them is the useless balloon fists. Either way they don't carry the actual weapon, and are just for pointing somewhere. My approach would be either a mini mortis dreadnought or exoskeleton

Now if there were a way to make them work on the tabletop...
