StormLion
So, I've placed some of shapeways 3D printed decals on my miniatures and they look great. The problem? I've had a sudden desire to amend my original plan and these no longer work on my guys (well they may, I'm asking this as a backup). They are all painted, but can anyone think of the least damaging way to remove them? I'm more concerned about damaging the shoulder pad, I don't care if the decal gets destroyed. Aothaine
You could try clippers and files. What glue did you use to put them on? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/341415-removing-shapeways-decals/#findComment-4933305 Share on other sites
Carlson793
If they were attached with super glue, put them in the freezer for a while. It should cause the super glue to become brittle, making it easier to separate from the shoulder pad. StormLion
I used my plastic/modeling glue. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/341415-removing-shapeways-decals/#findComment-4933312 Share on other sites
Carlson793
That'll make it harder to remove. Basically, you're gonna have to cut/scrape/sand/file the logo off. Model glue melts the plastic between the parts, which mixes and solidifies into a single part. StormLion
Ok, thanks. I will sacrifice one or two of the decals to see what I can do. Stoic Raptor
I didn't even realize that the Shapeways stuff was soluble to styrene cement. I thought it needed to go on with superglue. Well...they stuck on there. I suppose we will find out how well soon. Stoic Raptor
They might have just stuck because the shoulder pad melted a bit, not the applique. Try just peeling it off to see. Subtle Discord
I didn't even realize that the Shapeways stuff was soluble to styrene cement. I thought it needed to go on with superglue. If it's Sahpeways 'FXD' printing process, then that's Polyjet and absolutely not soluble using organic solvents. I suspect you're correct, and the shoulder pad melted bonding with the surface of the printed icon. You might be in luck and have the parts pop right off. Additionally, Polyjet is very brittle so even if it was put on with super glue, you should be able to carefully peel, crack, and flake the material away, before you need to deal with the glue somehow. StormLion
I'm go run some trials/sacrifices next time I get to my table. Of course I will also need a decal to replace it with. StormLion
So, I don't think it turned out that bad. What do you guys think? Now that I know it's possible, I have to decide if I want to. http://imageshack.com/a/img924/4791/XsVvox.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img924/6953/H57XL0.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img922/8430/FCeUfE.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/341415-removing-shapeways-decals/#findComment-4934806 Share on other sites
Stoic Raptor
If you're planning to apply a decal to that, you're going to have to make it really smooth. I'd recommend sanding it rather than just painting over. Honestly, that was barely any sanding what so ever.
