Frater Cornelius
It does not. Aren't those leaked Space Marine Conquests books supposed to be a follow up to Dark Imperium? Anyway, people recommend Calgar's Siege and Calgar's Fury if you like UM, want to see them in a good and human light instead of perfect Wardian mary sues and if you want to start liking Calgar. I've bit the bullet picked up both about 30 minutes ago. I ain't much of a reader unless something biblical is involved, but I thought maybe it'll drown a lot of the UM dislike, curtesy of 4chan and internet memes, as well as reinvigorate my project ;) Hopper21 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/341516-reading-recommendations/#findComment-4936071 Share on other sites

Frater Cornelius
without turning this into a dark imperium thread I did like the mental questions gman was having about the big E. Gutted he didnt have a dust up with mortz. None of that until the next Guilliman book comes out, whenever that may be, as far as i am aware. I enjoyed that part myself. Still, I enjoy all background and if you do, too, try the two Calgar books next ;) Hopper21 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/341516-reading-recommendations/#findComment-4936111 Share on other sites
Grim Dog Studios
If you’re interested in reading about 30K Ultras as well there is the whole Imperium secundus line of books in the Horus Heresy series. Dark Imperium is the only 40k Ultramarine book I’ve read so can’t really comment on any 40K books sorry! Brother Lunkhead
Just to give you yet another choice, Robbie MacNiven (B&C's RobMac) has a new WS novel out: The Last Hunt. It's set in the post Gathering Storm timeline. If you're familiar with Chris Wraight's take on the WS and like it, I think you'll like this one. BluejayJunior
I just picked up Crusade + Other Stories. It's got a novella (Crusade) and some short stories. It's pretty inexpensive. I've only finished the Crusade story so far, but it was good. It's got some Primaris UM vs Death Guard. I also suggest Rynn's World. It's not Ultramarines, but a very good Space Marine book, none the less. robofish7591
The only problem with reading Rynn's World is that you may want to start a Crimson Fists army! Frater Cornelius
I got both Calgar's Siege and Fury. I am a slow reader, so I expected to take a while with Calgar's Siege. Well, I ended up blasting through it in less than half a day. It gripped me. I am not big reader and I couldn't tell a dime novel from Shakespeare himself. What I can tell is that I had a blast reading it. I was fully immersed and I enjoy it all the way, to be point where my heart ached with every UM death. The representation is a far cry from what the UM haters attribute to them. If you are an UM fan, read it. If you are a hater, try it and see if this changes your outlook. One particular thing that stuck with me was this: Calgar values human life. A lot. He is aware how being an Astartes can drain your humanity or turn you arrogant. He strictly enforces that Astartes are meant to serve humanity, not the other way around. He was touring outlying systems to check up on them, so they are not forgotten. He even carried Guardsmen from his personal guard on his back as did other Astartes when they needed to move quicker. He wouldn't leave anyone behind. Along with the realizations that Valerian had, it shows how important the retaining of humanity is to the Ultramarines. The inner thoughts and feelings of Calgar were also a good insight. Overall, I am really happy to have UM as my army of choice and I can not wait for Calgar's Fury Edited November 26, 2017 by Frater Cornelius Hopper21 and robofish7591 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/341516-reading-recommendations/#findComment-4941998 Share on other sites
