So out of all the Space Marine armies the two i have always liked the most were Grey Knights and Blood Angels. I love the red look, love the lore of the death company and also love the look of the angelic Sanguinary Guard.

I was just wondering what its like to play a BA army, what are the pro's and cons and what do you suggest is a good starting point to buy. I know the new codex is coming out soon so i was thinking of picking that up along with the Start Collecting Box. But i have seen some bigger boxes as well that look cool and give me all sorts of cool models.

Cheers.

If the internet is to be believed, it is like drinking pure condensed misery :biggrin.:

From I can tell, gunlines are not your things. Go fast, close with the enemy, Meltas, chopping, done before lunch

We Blood Angels have had a bit of a rough time of it since the start of 6th Ed.

We are an army which is mostly geared around assault and maneuverability in a shooting game.

That being said, if you enjoy armies that are quite mobile we've tended to fall into that category (we arent really in 8th ed, but hopefully the codex returns to us a bit of the missing speed we had).

Our special units are essentially all geared to assault, and most of our characters provide yet more bubbles to work with. Be careful with characters though as they eat up points quickly.

At our core we are still a space marine army, and that means for the most part the best way to play us is similar to how you'd play any other marine army, we just in theory have slightly better combat options.

Sanguinary Guard are good, 2 wounds and a 2+ save is good for being survivable, and they can dish out decent enough damage, but they do suffer from being very expensive. Death company make for an excellent unit to murder hordes with.

Pure, condensed misery, with a chaser of nostalgia for what was and what will never be lol.

There are a couple of ways to play Blood Angels (and of course mix and match those styles)

- Codex style marine, with mainly shooting units, tanks devastators/troops etc.

This style can work but it is not really something unique, also if you play competitively there is no HQ that buffs to the level of Guilliman.

- Archangel / Veteran / First company

This is where you will play Vanguard Veteran with claws, Sanguinary Guard, Assault terminators. Pretty Funny gameplay, I love the sanguinary guard but 8th edition punishes a lot Elite style army. It is harder to claim objective and it is easy to have a lot of multi damage weapons.

- Death company

The name says it all, Death company with a priest and lemartes are hallmark of many blood angel armies. While melee is harder to get right (you have to get there and sometime the HQ dont follow the charge)

Even if  lot of people claimed that DC got nerfed in 8th edition, they pack a lot of attacks when they charge and they are very good versus infantry. For 20 pts a DC marine with Jump pack can Shoot his bolter for 2 shots followed by 4 attacks on the charge with a chainsword. If you add a few axes you can also slash marines quites effectively.

- Dreadnought army

Ok not really that much BA specific, but as we have a HQ Librairian Dreadnought with vanguard detachement some of us have fun with all dread army.

- Boring Spam lists

In very competitive environement you might want to spam stormraven and razorbacks. However I dont think this brings the best of the game in general.

For buying list: the start collecting box will give you codex style play, so will the normal space marine start collecting.

The primaris half of Dark imperium is also a good deal if you can sell the deathguard part. While the primaris have very few options, the models are quite cool.

I think the death company strike force is quite good a good box. The Chaplain model is awsome, better than the models they have for Lemartes and Artorath. The deadnought can be built as death company, normal furioso or librairian. You also get 15 death company marine that have a lot of options: bolter/bolt pistol/chainsword and 3 hammers, 3 power sword, 3 plasma pistols and normal backpack and jump pack.

I love the red look, love the lore of the death company and also love the look of the angelic Sanguinary Guard.

And that's all you need.

Playing Blood Angels is to play the best chapter, but doing so with humility. No need to brag endlessly about ourselves and our Primarch like the Space Wolves. No need to cover up our past and pretend to be loyalists like the Dark Angels. The Blood Angels were there when it mattered, and always have been, at the expense of their very souls.

Rules wise, if you give the best chapter the best rules nobody will play the other chapters, so ours have been a bit weaker for a long time, however this may change in a couple of weeks.

To fight as Blood Angels is to wield golden armoured superhumans: gods of battle writ large in flesh and descending upon the enemies of mankind on pillars of fire, weapons crackling, barely containing the power within. To fight against them is to know death.

Very well put.

I think this old bit was from ~2nd or 3rd ed on Sanguinius...

"And so it was that they fought - the Angel and the Beast. Titanic must have been that struggle, between those two gods amongst men. Long must they have rained blows upon one another, until it seemed that the life of the universe itself hung in the balance...Yet, Sanguinius was bested...Even as the blade of death waited to strike him, Sanguinius would not turn from the path of Light. Thus it was that Sanguinius passed from this world. He who was everything a man should be was taken from us by the Darkness. A thousand times a thousand years of lamenting will never atone for our loss.

When the armor of your faith is buckled and torn, see in your mind that magnificent hero. Think upon his deeds and be humble, for his like will never walk the galaxy again."

Unlike Bobby G...

"Yo - been sleeping. What I miss?"

Fast and choppy is what I would characterise Blood Angels. Although surprisingly, they could do Fast and Shooty as well thanks to Baal Predators in past edition and Fast Vehicles. Not sure how well BA can do that anymore.

For now though, BA are essentially red marines with no chapter tactics yet. However, their unique units and characters are boss although Death Company took a nerf with the removal of their fearless and more expensive equipment. Still they retain extra attack when they charge.

I'd actually characterise Blood Angels as fast and in your face. Not necessarily shooty or choopy. They do both as long as they get to the enemy fast and operate within grenade throwing range.

That being said Blood Angels don't do JUST that. They also do all the fun ranged shenanigans other Marine chapters do on top of that if it fits the situation. ^^

Space Wolves got a tank named after their Primarch

That's what they want you to think. Russ was named after the tank. He was very close to actually being called "Hellstrike missile launcher"

  • 3 weeks later...

So i bought the codex and a box of primaris + the new leutenant model.

Ill probably got the start collecting box next and some death watch.

Should be a good start.

I know it might be considered weird but i really like primaris marine models!

I think a lot of people like the models. I just think the "fluff" and the fact that they may be replacing already beloved miniatures (legacy marines some people call them, mini marines others) has turned some people off.

I have embraced primaris, but they will be used along with, not to replace, my existing miniatures.
