Tomorrow I'm playing in a "Tanksgiving" event. 1000 pts, 50% of which must be vehicles.

I'll be playing my RG. Anybody have any ideas about what to bring?

Here's what I have for vehicles:

Land Raider Crusader

Redemptor Dread

Venerable Dread

Land Speeder Storm

Hunter or Rhino or Razorback

Stormtalon Gunship

I have various other assorted infantry models

My initial list was the LRC, Redemptor Dread, and 2 units of 5 Devastators, each of which have 2 lascannons, 1 with a heavy bolter, and the other a missile launcher.  That gives me 3 heavy slots and I can make a spearhead detachment out of them.  That also leaves me enough for a couple characters, I was thinking Shrike and a Lt, but I'm VERY flexible on those last 2 items.

Any ideas, thoughts?

I like your list. I think the only option would be something like:

Redemptor

Ven Dread (or Reg Dread)

Stormtalon Gunship

Razorback

Depending on loadouts this is ~500-600 points and capitalizes a little more on our CT. Then from there you could get like a Techmarine to run alongside the dreads (for funsies). Your last elite slot (using a Vanguard detachment) could be something like 5x Reivers or Cets/Sternguard, and then a small comliment of buffing HQs like Shrike/Captain/Lt, etc.

I would imagine given the nature of the event most folks would pack in a ton of AT in their lists, and I think the LRC will probably die on the first turn in most games as a result. If I had my choice, id rather run an entire list that takes advantage of the -1 to Hit (You could even drop the Razorback for this exact reason for more bodies, as well)

Either way, sounds like a fun event. Good luck!

Thanks Vyper.  Yeah, I've been considering the various angles. I feel dirty not bringing a tank, though, to an event called "Tanksgiving".

I'm hoping I can hide my LRC behind some terrain if I don't get first turn.  I need the anit-personnel dakka it offers, but like you said, I'm always loathe to field anything that doesn't leverage Chapter Tactics.

Since you gotta have 50% tanks... LRC doesnt sound so good since it has no anti tank and costs almost 300 points.  Since all lists are filled with tanks i dont think you can have enough anti tank.  Every unit should have something that can deal multiple wounds reliably to a t7+ target.

Twin lascannon storm talon

Twin lascannon razorback

Twin lascannon venerable dread... always in cover!

The hunter MIGHT be usable if you think you will face enough units with the fly keyword.... what you can do with it is run it up the table and try to tank shock their vehicles so they cant shoot.  Wouldnt it be glorious if someone shot at your hunter instead your other stuff?

The same could apply to the Land Speeder Storm... problem with that thing is that it is going to die to minimal shooting.

You could also consider using SFTS on shrike and another infantry squad and use them to tie up vehicles in CC.  Maybe Shrike and 5 Reivers if you have the models... that could be super annoying to deal with if they are in cover and a threat to charge.  You could also consider a generic captain with the Ravens Fury and the Raven Guard warlord trait.  That is a turn 1 threat to tie stuff up in combat and be generally annoying.

Ok, so tourney over.  Here's what my final list looked like:

Captain with Thunderhammer, Stormbolter, and Armor Indomitus

Techmarine with Servo Arm, Chainsword and Stormbolter (thanks itvyper)

Redemptor Dread with macro plasma, onslaught gatling, 2 stormbolters, and Icarus rocket pod

7 Devastators, 2 lascannons, 1 missile launcher, 1 stormbolter, and armorium cherub

7 Devastators, 2 lascannons, 1 heavy bolter, 1 stormbolter and armorium cherub

1 Land Raider Crusader, twin assault canon, 2x hurricanes, 1 multimelta and 1 stormbolter

Game 1 vs. Death Guard.

List was something like this:

1 Chaos Sorcerer (don't remember loadout)

1 Foetid Bloat Drone with 2 flamer cannons

1 Foetid Bloat Drone with flesh mower

1 Chaos Spawn

1 Renegade Knight

This game started me off on the back foot (I lost board edge pick and then he seized the initiative).  My first 2 rounds of shooting were met with lots of rolls of "2", on either my hit rolls or wound rolls for my lascannons (though I did get a lucky hit to get 6 wounds off the bat on his knight).  What did get through seemed to uncannily roll a 5 on Disgustingly Resilient.  But when all was said and done, I tabled my opponent and lost only my LRC and Techmarine.

Game 2 vs. Catachan Imperial Guard

List was something like this:

1 Leman Russ with punisher gatling cannon

1 Manticore

1 Wyvern

1 Valkyrie

3 squads of 10 catachans. not sure of specific load outs

3 platoon commanders? had plasma pistols

1 Stracken

1 Company Commander

3 Lascannon heavy weapon templates

My opponent deployed the manticore and wyvern behind and out of LOS, as such I had to spread out my forces in order to get good shooting angles on his various units, putting some models outside of my captain buff. My goal was to quickly knock all his tanks into their secondary brackets, combined with my chapter tactic, he'd be hitting on 6's.  Despite losing the initiative (again) my goal worked pretty solidly.  I tabled him on turn 4.

One of the things both of these players mentioned, and weren't expecting, was how much dakka I was able to put out. There were 7 storm bolters in my list, combined with hurricane bolters and the few boltguns I had, in one turn, I was able to put out 60 bolters shots in one round against the IG infantry list.

Game 3 vs. Alaitoc Eldar

My opponent's list was:

1 Warlock

5 Fire Dragons with meltaguns

2 Wave Serpents with

1 Fire Prism

1 Hemlock with Psyker dude inside

2 War Walkers with stargun and some lance gun thing

There was line of site blocking terrain that my opponent used to good advantage. He deepstruck his firedragons, and moved his hemlock very far up, which allowed it to do some psychic power letting them move into melta range.  This let him pop my Redemptor Dreadnought turn 1.  His war walkers and Hemlock in subsequent turn, along with Fire prism were able to take down my LRC. I STFS my Devestator team behind his lines to get clear line of site. This was a good battle. My opponent won this game, take down 3 of my units in total (LRC, Dread and 1 unit of Devestators), to my 3 (Firedragons, Hemlock, and 1 Warwalker). Unfortunately, he also got 1st blood, which allowed him the victory. After he had done his damage he retreated his Wave Serpents and remaining War Walker behind LOS blocking terrain and I wasn't able to get any shots in the last 3 rounds. So...to quote Apollo Creed, he won, but he didn't beat me.

At the end of the day, Raven Guard placed 3rd out of 12 contestants.  A solid day for RG!

EDIT. Tourney results were:

Eldar 1st

Nidzilla 2nd

RG 3rd

You'd have to ask him that, but from my angle it looked pretty horrible.  In terms of army-list 'match ups', I think mine was probably the worst possible match up he could have had.  For example, the first turn his punisher gatling cannon moved up, he was hitting my RG on 6's (move + chapter tactic). He had 40 shots (20 shots firing twice).  But between hitting on 6's and me getting a 2+ save (cover), he didn't do a single wound to my devastator squad. I think that really took some wind out of his sails.

He isn't a new player, but he is new, I think to Imperial Guard.

In any event I might have it wrong, too.  I might have knocked him into the 2nd bracket by the time that happened. (6 hours of 40k can leave one's memory fuzzy).
