Hail Brothers of Russ

Just coming back to the game and universe after a 20+ year absence. A few noobie questions I have if that’s ok;

1 - when I start building my great company, am I locked into the current wolflords in the index or can I start my own wolflord and create a great company

2 - painting. Am I locked into the current colour scheme? The almost baby blue is nice, but not as feral and fear inducing as I think it should be.

3 - what’s the best place to start for fluff? I have just done the first two books of HH but I want to look more towards the SW back story and legends and lore

Thanks for reading

Welcome brother,

1. You can use your own wolf Lord or even use a current wolf Lord and just change the name so it fits your own company. There is normally 13 Great Companies (1 is for the lost SWs), there is also lost companies which would be like a company that was lost or left the Aett due to differences. This is our version of successors.

2. No you are not, especially if you company is a lost one.

3. Warzone Fenris would give you a glimpse of the current situation. I also recommend the Leman Russ novel to give a different side of the wolves.

I'm going to use my company as it is similiar to what you are asking. My company is using a custom wolf Lord, or Arjac depending on what is needed. It also uses the dark grey from the HH era. My company was lost in a warp stone and since the recent events has been thrown back into the material on the BA side of the rift.

Hopefully this fulfills your answers.

There are 2 schools of Space Wolf

The Ragnar series was one of the first to introduce present time SW.  I enjoyed the novels (think there are 6 or so)

When HH happened they sort of 'retconned' space wolves

The novels are great but they kind of forced a change on it and said no...thats not a real space wolf...THIS is a real space wolf

The common theme in all SW material is fierce independence and a dislike of authority (especially corrupt and incompetent authority)

Perfectly fine to be a Lost company wolf lord with your own colors

Many have begun returning to Fenris in the current time of need

Hi Rocky, I'm here to address your question regarding fluff.

Good novels for Space Wolves currently, excluding the old campy Ragnar series (in order of what I deem most entertaining).....

1) Battle of the Fang by Chris Wright (Filled with awesome, everything well done even Magnus himself)

2) The Wolf King novella by Chris Wright (Russ is a little emo but still awsome)

3) Prospero Burns by Dan Abnett (strange telling of Space Wolves but still awesome.

4) Scars by Chris Wright (mainly about Scars but about 10% has the Wolves in it.)

5) Lone wolf novella by Chris Wright (touching story of a Long wolf redeeming himself in his own eyes)

6) Stormseeker novella by Alex Worley (hilarious short story of a Iron Priest piloting a Stormwolf trolling a couple of Dark Eldar planes)

7) Ragnar Blackmane by ADB (more serious uptake on the young wolf lord, not so much "marty stu" ness)

Other good stuff which I haven't read but are supposedly good, is the Leman Russ Primarch series, as well as the old campy ragnar ones.

Other books I know but wouldn't recomend are the novelization of the Curse of the Wulfen, Legacy of Russ and Space Wolves legends, those books somehow get confused on whether Space wolves should be manly vikings or damn furries.

regarding your purchases, as always, I recommend buying a mixture of normal Grey Hunters and normal Tactical marines on a ratio of 1:1, so that you can mix and match 2 10 man squads worth of GH and BC. Typically i use the tactical marine torsos for bolter Grey Hunters and leave the more fancy Space Wolves torso for those with CC weapons.

Welcome to the Fang by the way.

1 - Your own Wolf Lord and Great Company is fine. The Wolves have always been a little vague about numbers.

2 - If you fancy a different colour scheme, the 30K Legion Livery is one possible alternative. Still SW but more storm-grey than sky-blue.

I would suggest building the army up slowly. We have not received our 8th edition codex yet but we know the schedule through to early next year and we are not on it. Most likely we will be Spring 2018.

Kasper thankyou for that list, I’ll start tearing into some of those soon. Funnily enough I was looking at curse of the wolfen, I’ll pass it by for now lol

Karhedronuk thanks for the advice, I have been looking at the 30k colour scheme and think I’ll use that to start with, I’m a complete novice though and never painted a model, last thing I painted wa a wall lol.

Hey Tigurius yeah I have been checking out your journey too. Looks good so far, glad your kids are well into it, I’m hoping mine will be too lol

I only paint walls when I have too (when me and the wife compromise on decorating - she cuts in, I do as I’m told

Cheapest would be the Lone wolf novella, but it is lumped together with a lot of substandard wolf stories in one of the Black Library packs.

But Lone Wolf still holds a place in my heart because of its especially touchy, even happy ending. Which is rare enough in 40K literature.

Edited: sorry, I meant to say Lone wolf can be bought as a stand alone story, but you can also buy it as a package with other Space wolf shorts. But that one I won't recommend as most of the story are not every good (in my opinion), so I recommend just get the Lone Wolf one. Makes a nice pocket story for your phone that will leave you warm and fuzzy in the end. (no pun intended believe me)

If you can track down the old 2nd edition SW codex, that actually has a decent amount of fluff and short stories in it which help to set the tone for the Sons of Russ. You can probably find it as a PDF online with a bit of searching.

Hja! Welcome to the Fang brother.

I would say yes to the custom Wolf Lord and the colours are yours to choose. I prefer to keep close to the main scheme but am actually going to be going back to the sky blue and Warhammer TV Space Wolf Grey painting guide is awesome! Also check one of our very talented brothers on this very forum. Search for Primaris Sized Space Wolves....they look incredible.

I second the recommendation for Ragnard by ADB and would also recommend the Blood of Asaheim series as it deals with the struggle of returning to the Rout after a long service with the Deathwatch and Chris Wraight really makes it come to life.

Finally I would also recommend Emperor's GIft by ADB who paints the wolves in a really amazing light, it is very Grey Knight centric but does a great services to the Sons of Russ.

Most of all welcome and enjoy the hobby! It is a great one to be a part of

Thank you Brothers for the welcome

Karhedronuk I managed to find the 2nd edition codex going on eBay for £11. Just waiting for it to turn up.

Been checking out the painting tutorials and everything else that you have all recommended. Loving it all
