A Knight is a great project, you can really go to town on it as something different  Looking forward to seeing more, is it a kit you can magnetise?

You can, but the poryphero...porpherio...pippilongsto...King of Giants only has one build so I'm probably going to use some apoxy to make it nice and ruggedly built. Plus, who doesn't like four gigantic lascannons?!?

Not much of an update, since I haven't had time to paint, but I had an idea for my Death Riders.

I want to put this...

On this...

I love my death riders but they don't fit with the SA at all. I'm thinking it might be worth the work to get these helmets to fit because I think they'd at least look like they belong on the same table. Maybe.

Thoughts?

I recommend you try it out. Both Anvil and FW IG miniatures are true 28 mm as opposed to the GWcCadians' heroic 28 mm so the scale should match.

It would be a great custom conversion that makes your cavalry sync with the rest of your army.

In my never ending quest to at least not do nothing for my army, I tinkered with some old derelict sentinels and tank crew bits. With magnets, I can even have some options. If I like this when its painted, I'll make up two more. I just need one more tank crew so its a good things they weren't discontinued...he...hehe.

I've made my way back to my beautiful IG...after about a year. :whistling:

Tomorrow, assuming the weirdness in my back today is a temporary thing, I'll be taking this 2k army to a tournament. We've got some out of towners showing up with what sounds like decent lists so I'm eager to see how this works out.

Commissar Yarrick

Company Commander (Warlord: Old Grudges) - Plasma Pistol and Power Sword

And enough points left over to pick up an assassin each game.

Wish me luck and encourage me next week to write about it so that I get my lazy butt in gear.

I assume that the MoO is to increase the reroll 1s bubble for your artillery. Harker can't be enough for everyone. If you drop 1 wyvern and don't bring an assassin, you can field a squad of bullgryns. Their attacks have the same damage profile as an autocannon and they can give you a little more melee punch.

Sadly, I don't own any bullgryn. I'm thinking about changing that. Will certainly if I perform well on Saturday.

The MoO is more there for the benefits of the specialist detachment. He can act as Field Commander and bring the relic, forcing my enemies to choose which characters to go after. Sniper and anti-character abilities are becoming more common in my meta so I want to force my enemies to split their attention away from my warlord or other officers. Also, his shooting can potentially earn his value by itself, with a bit of luck. We'll see tomorrow.

Good luck. As someone who also doesn't soup, I hope you win.

Well, my back was feeling better(ish) so I went to the event and that was a...mistake. Big mistake. Still hurting. My world is pain; the kind of pain best expressed through bad poetry written on black paper with white ink.

Anywho, I did get in a game and a half and it was enlightening on the list though.

Game 1 vs. Crimson Fist/Custodes/SoB

His list was kind of a hodgepodge of Imperium with, iirc, the following:

Battation of CF:

Phobos Captain

Phobos Librarian

Infiltratros x10

Veteran Intercessors x10

Veteran Intercessors x10

Veteran Intercessors x5

Suppressors

Eliminators

Las/HB Predator

Patrol of Custodes:

Bike Shield Captain

Custodes x4

Grav-Carrier

Battalion of SoB:

Cannoness x2

5x2 Battle Sisters - Heavy Bolter

5 Battle Sisters - Flamer

He added an eversor with strategem.

Basically, the custodes and infiltrators took point, with the marines moving to mid-field or providing fire support, and the sisters were rear objective farmers. I took head hunter on his Phobos Captain, who was his warlord, and this caused him to be somewhat fearful with him, since he didn't want me to take those points with my vindicare. He was primed to move on me with his custodes and infiltrators but I had first turn on hammer and anvil.

Hammer and Anvil is a personal insult to people with struggling back issues :censored:

I deployed all along my zone, spreading the machines our and covering them all with infantry. Turn 1 went as I hoped. I took out the carrier, so that those custodes had to walk, and put and lot of damage on his infiltrators. Killing the carrier literally took all of my AT (I see that being a problem in this list) but it was worth it.

He moved toward me and did some damage but nothing too severe. Now that the hard targets were open, I could start doing some meaningful damage.

Highlights:

  • His eversor came in, murdered and infantry squad and a half, and promptly ate lead, failing three chances to blow up on units.
  • His surviving infiltrator brought back the sergeant, charged and murdered and infantry squad, and then died.
  • On one of my turns his shield-captain was only covered by the custodes, so I focues my basilisks on those, then the wyverns, and then the vindicare finished the last one with a headshot; this allowed two manticores to focus on his shield captain and, with a small help from infantry, finished him off before he could be too much of a nuisance.
  • The vindicare was a mixed bag this game. He failed, repeatedly, to hurt the librarian or the cannonesses, because my opponent kept making armor saves, but finished off the custodes squad (opening up the shield captain) and then, in the last turn, he had one chance to kill the phobos captain and aced him in one shot (attaboy!)

Game 2 vs. Dark Eldar

His army was a battalion of Prophets of Flesh, with a ton of venoms, grotesques, and wracks, a Black Heart spearhead, with obligatory ravagers and more venoms, and a Black Heart air wing of flyers.

I didn't finish this game. We had corner deployment (ouch!) and I kept forgetting my rules. I bounced off of his army on turn 1 (failing to meaningfully hurt his characters due to 6+ fnp!) and he was one me for turn 2 melee with a maxed out grotesque unit. I had nowhere to run and was playing with 1/2 my bonuses because I was in too much pain to remember them.

I asked him if it was alright (he came to play games) and he said it was fine, we had a quick drink, and I went home.

I learned a few things.

  1. My army does lack AT. I'm not 100% sure where to fix this. Catachan infantry doesn't really benefit as much from lascannons and I don't want to drop any tanks except maybe the hydra.
  2. Tough melee will be a problem. I had no answer to those grotesques. The would take a couple of turns to kill and could kill me alone if they closed. Table corners hurt but it wasn't the only problems here.
  3. BS4+ sucks the instant a -1 to hit applies. I might need to strongly consider, sigh, Cadians, to get overlapping fields of fire. It would also cause me to drop Harker and Yarrick, allowing me to potentially fit in some AT somewhere. Hit venoms and flyers just couldn't be hit reliably on a 5+ and the extra shots became not as worth it.
  4. This army is hard to work within the time constraints. 10 infantry squads means deployment takes forever and their job as blockers means I rarely don't want to move them. We only got into round 4 in game 1. Makes me miss knights.

So, new codex, new me, amiright?

I'm working on getting back into guard for the time being and, as such, I figured I'd resurrect this old thread and maybe, just maybe, get some painting done. To that end, I need some goals. I've got two lists in mind. The first is simple (three super heavies, an officer, and a bunch of infantry) but the one below is the more "normal" flavored list for people who think super heavies are somehow cheating. I'd love the communities feedback on it:

HQ-

Lord Solar Leontus (Warlord: Grand Strategist)

Cadian Command Squad: Plasmagun, Master Vox, Medi-Pack, Regimental Standard (Relic: Finial of the Nemrodesh 1st), Ogryn Bodyguard (Slabshield and Maul)

Tank Commander - Battle Cannon (Gatekeeper) and Lascannon

Elite-

Commissar - Bolt Pistol and Chainsword

Troops-

Cadian Shock Troops (3 squads) - Vox, Meltagun x2, and Chainsword/Laspistol (each)

Cadian Shock Troops (3 squads) - Vox, Plasmagun x2, and Chainsword/Laspistol (each)

Fast Attack-

Rough Riders x10

Rough Riders x10

Rough Riders x10

Heavy Support-

Leman Russ - Demolisher Cannon and Heavy Bolter

Leman Russ - Demolisher Cannon and Heavy Bolter

Leman Russ - Vanquisher Cannon, Lascannon, Heavy Stubber, and Veteran Commander (Elite Sharpshooters)

Battle Plan:

Rough Riders get on the enemy fast. I honestly don't care if they survive, so long as they do some damage and buy the rest of the army time to attack. Russes get to firing position and lay into the enemy while being screened by horses and dudes. Shock troops get on objectives and then contribute what shooting they can. Command squad goes where it can give the most bonuses. Leontus goes where the orders will benefit most (probably the horses.)
