I believe taking the Daemon Princes of the Ruinstorm as an HQ allow 7th edition daemons as primary... but I don't have my rules with me to confirm.

As per the ruling on Samus's rules, you can play daemons as a primary detachment. Doing so allows you to take Samus as a HQ instead of a LoW. So, there's actually nothing to suggest that deamons can only be taken as an allied detachment. In which case, I presume that Angelus will provide additional rules and more units as well as giving them a proper allies table etc. That is simply speculation though.

Real talk...

Can you even use Daemons as a legal Primary Detachment in the Heresy yet?

I thought they were only allies, at least until Angelus...

Why not?

You can stuff like Orks or Eldar as well.

As per the rules you can't take either Orks or Eldar as allies. Sure, you can play against them but they don't have any official place among the HH ruleset.

Allies are for newbies anyway.

In the Heresy Daemons are small portions of big armies. Small clusters of BOING warp stuff in your face, HAHA!

Nothing more.

The rules show that perfectly.

If you want a daemon army plus some marines make house rules but it doesn't seem very narrative driven in my book.

I know, maybe you just want to start your own legion. Then Go for it.

But don't just do the 40k walk and pick some marines because you need the rules.

Apologies for my confusion then! He seemed certain they were usable but either way thanks for the feedback. Sounds like I should just shut up and stick with my Iron Warriors until Angelus comes out.

If my questions or interest in a full daemon army gave anyone a headache I’m sorry!

Legions are cooler anyway.

Oh nooooo.

I didn't want to stop you from playing Daemons.

Do it.

Mix 'em with marines if you like to. After all it's great fun to do so. I just wanted to point out that it is even more fun in my very humble opinion if you do that with some kind of story in your head.

Now I feel stupid going-again- full douchbag.

Please feel free to play whatever suits you and your friends and don't listen to the angry mumblings of an old nerd on the internet. :)

Hey hey no problem.

I agree I generally need some kind of head cannon running to make me enjoy what I’m doing. The thread was mainly a feeler to see if it was worth pursuing with the Daemons. I ended up ordering an Infernus Predator Anihilator and Leviathan. So I’m sure the IW will end up getting some work in before the Daemons. Allies for now sounds good for me!

It's just one of those things that's very vague at the moment and FW hasn't answered any frequently-asked questions in over a year so it's kind of a sore spot.  But with a get-you-by list in the rulebook and Andy Hoare saying that you could use older rules if you had them, it sounds like they meant for them to be playable alone.  Just don't take daemon lists of the kind that appeared in 40k competitive tournaments...

Well technically they are not a full army but 30k is a narrative driven game and I'd be totally fine with someone using them.

When it comes to Daemon Princes, why couldn't you use them? Be'lakor is ancient and there must be many other Princes, favoured servants of the Gods on a distant planet far from the Crusade worshipping the Four.
