So...after crunching the new points and working with lists, a question struck me and I think it bears discussing:

"Are Inceptors good now?"

I don't mean "Oh they're appropriately costed and no longer bad." I mean legit good. They still aren't sturdy. T5 2W isn't anything to write home about. But they had such a dramatic reduction in cost that I find I'm much more willing to pay for them to show up, dakka, and die. Their offensive power is immense, they are fast, and immune to the alpha strike. Furthermore, as Ultramarines, we have good options. We can toss out Scions to release them from a captain's leash. Conversely, they are magnificent support if you drop Calgar and Terminators in with them.

So what do you think? Did this turd get polished into a gem?

Was that drop in points from the new CA?

Yep 59 points for Plasma, 45 points for Dakka Inceptors. I'm currently building 12 Plasma inceptors, so yes, I think they are good. Their output is, point-per-point, comparable to Plasma Hellblasters in rapid fire range. They do have big problems with screens, but that's true for most of the Primaris range. Having full plasma output for more than one round is more that I can hope for with the current Primaris range.

Yes, they are good. You can drop units to both clear chaff and to hit more elite infantry.

I wouldn't use them to go after anything above t6.

3 plasma Inceptors are cheaper than 5 combi plasma Termies and have more shots. They also aren't much higher than 5 Scions now.

The bolter variants are also worthwhile as they are cheap enough to use to chase objectives from reserves whilst providing fire support.

I used 2x units of 3 with Assault bolters, and one unit of 3 with the Plasma Exterminators against Necrons. The Plasma guys obliterated a Ghost Arc on their own, and the immense number of shots was incredibly good. I dropped them in with a Captain and Lieutenant for support, you wouldn’t believe the number of ones I rolled.

What sort of lists do they fit in though? Could a regular UM shooty list benefit from one Bolter unit dropping into the backlines? Why not take Aggressors that can keep up? Or are they better in a dedicated fast list with plenty of Scouts, Scout bikes, Reivers and so forth? Or hey, maybe a dedicated Gravis list with Dreads? That would look awesome.

With Inceptors and Aggressors being playable, are we moving into dedicated Primaris territory? I mean, there are minor tools that I will always use. Scouts come to mind. But other than that, we either need to decide on a play style and mix units or go full Primaris. The days of having few viable units to a point of just picking the best of both worlds seem to be past.

The only reason I'm jealous of Inceptors, as a purely non-Primaris player, is because I've always wanted to have a shooty Jump Pack unit.

If Assault Marines could have Bolters I'd be happy enough, but no. Only Cawl's bloody fancy pants super dooper special better-than-the-rest Marines.

I always thought they were good, now they're super affordable on top of it.

Well sure, them...and the Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard and Death Company, the Space Wolves Wolf Guard, Grey Knights Interceptors, and Company Veterans...;)

I still like Hellblasters better but with the point reduction there is a place for Inceptors. I like the plasma but D3 shots is kind of a joke IMO .

A minimum sized squad is shooting 6d3 plasma shots, it averages out really well.  I only started using Inceptors after the points reduction and in the two games I have used them in they have done really well.

Did I miss something under points values? A single assault bolter is 15 points, and each model carries two of them. That puts each inceptor model with assault bolters at 60 points, not 45.

Chapter Approved dropped Assault Bolters down to 10 points each, and Inceptors down to 25 each, so they're 45. Pretty sexy, and (combined with the Plasma Exterminator drop to 17 each) has finally tempted me to pick up Primaris. Only Inceptors for now, but the floodgates are open...

Somehow I missed the drop in points there. Must not be paying enough attention.
