Almost every chapter master provides and gives a unique aura to his members of his chapter that surround him. The more expensive ones tend to give better buffs or beasts in close combat.

Huron, Azreal, and Marnues are the only three to give command points being a +3 or +4 swing. And the most expensive ones, past Shrike Range tend to have Artificier or 2+ Sv from some source.

So I guess to open the floor because their a lot. In terms of GW Vanilla, Logan loses the most with his special buff being the Moral Immunity for only a specific unit choose. Additionally outside teleport striking he is the slowest and provides the least army buffs.

The best well it depend, Pedro provides a good counter attack unit. Gabriel is cheap. The second is that on the topic of buffs. The reroll charge buff is relatively common with Shrike and a couple Forged World Chapter Masters having. Black Templars just have it as an army.

Specific questions to answer

————

Most named chapter master cost the price of two liutanents + captain. Which is a pretty hefty price. Which ones do you think are worth it over the three characters?

Which Masters are just not? Or not worth losing your Chapter Stratagem and Chapter Relics for incase of successor?

Is the inbuilt Points cost worth it over having to spend 3 Command Points?

The full re-roll is very good and often underestimated. It gives an army more reliable guns in a system where elite armies do not work due to the lack of reliability. To be fair, I have not played against... well, any SM since 8th. No, scratch that. I played against one SM with Razorspam and a Captain before the first Codex dropped. That is it. So I can only comment on Calgar vs a CM for UM. Is he worth it? I'd argue that he is. Sure, you can buy two Lieutenants and a Captain, but they will do very little outside of buffing units. Calgar gives you CP instead of expending them, granting a 5CP swing, which is massive. He is a melee powerhouse and shoots very good. In essence, his performance is superior to those three characters combined. Having said that, he has one disadvantage. It is one model. If you want a mobile army that uses Stratagems for re-rolls to hit, the having 3 cheap characters is superior, because you can spread out your forces. If you have a concentrated core that deals the damage, then Calgar would be better. I think that in many cases it comes down to army composition more than anything. For Calgar, anyway.

I've found, in this edition, Shrike usually pulls his weight. I usually Startgem him with a 10-man Vanguard squad, all with claws.

They either butcher what they charge, or mob around and get protected from shooting attacks.

Sometimes they are too effective, which leaves them in a poor spot, but that's usually my fault.

Does Shrike need a 2+? It would come in useful sometimes. However, when tanking shots, it's usually his Iron Halo that does most of the work.

Helbrecht is something that I have come to rely on with my lists. Every time I think about leaving him out for anything but small point games like below 1500, I can't feel good about doing it. His re-rolls are amazing, and his strength buff really fleshes out the flavor of BT. It gives them a much needed minor boost in CC power against certain things, its hard to see my lists without him. Same thing with the Emperors Champion but he's a different beast, though he has alot of synergy with Helbrecht.

It helps that Helbrecht can be put in any transport that isn't a repulsor and has decent stats and weaponry himself.

Shrike is the best value.

For his point cost you get a reroll aura, and he has better movement than everyone but Dante.

The only downside is he kind of wilts in combat with most other characters. His claws being S4 really hurts there. The reroll to wound is nice, but he's wounding most things on a 4+ at best.
