I'm going to post this in my WiP thread in a mo, but wanted to stick it here, too, as you guys are just the bestest and might help the mental block I've got.

I've been taking so long on my Stormtalon that I'm procrastinating more and more for fear of screwing up work that I'm pleased with so far. She's converted and largely base coated, and I've added the first decals (inside the weapon pod on the nose), but I'm unsure of how much further to take the decals from here. It's the sliding scale between austere/boring<->interesting/overly busy.

I'm thinking about adding more decals to the tail fuselage section and the nose on the flat section just under the Aquila, but not sure what. I'm thinking of an Adeptus Astartes symbol on the tail, but never see these on Space Marine vehicles, and wondered if it's in some way innapropriate, or just because they're not easily accessible as decals? Is it a massive sin that the Adeptus Astartes symbol would probably be at least as big as the Raven Guard symbol? And a "Victorus Aut Mortis" on the nose: too obvious?

I also just thought about purity seals on the section on the main fuselage next to the engines and just below the antennae. Is that something that might reasonably be fixed to a supersonic gunship in the 41st Millennium, or just silly?

As you can see I'm drowning in self-doubt, here.

Me first!

I would use a RG symbol on the top of the tail, starboard side with the sigil oriented with the whole flyer.  Then, a number to denote it's place in the squadron on the rear ... thing between the main fuselage and the tail wings (words are failing me) on both sides.  And stop.

Even in the Codex, the RG keep their iconography and markings to a minimum.  Yet, they are still Astartes, so Aquila and motivationals (?) are to be expected.  At the same time, this thing is flying around, so if there are words to read then it's not killing the enemy fast enough

For my part, my plan would add another number to show which Company the squadron was assigned to on the bottom tail wing.

^_^

Thanks, Race. I like the idea of the top tail symbol and being asymmetrical. And I have some symbols made up that will fit there which saves me having to make more decals up!

I'm trying to keep away from Company markings, as in my head fluff this is a task force that has taken heavy losses and has restructured its force org to keep coherency, stripping and altering a lot of Codex markings. But the numbering within a squadron's got me thinking.

I usually use an accent color to denote company.

For example, on my Stormraven the hover jet housing on the wingtips are painted red.

It just seemed like a small area that gets painted a company color on assignment would be a fairly easy thing to do on short notice.

Thanks guys. I'd been thinking of blocking out one of the tail sections in white, like yours, Valaas. I really like how that's gone, but I don't want to break up the flow of the lengthened fuselage now. You've got me thinking with the weapon pod front boxes in white, though.

Claws, I get what your saying about lack of colour, too. Not sure about Company colours (since I've stripped all Company markings out of the force), so I'll have to think on something else.

And in turn I'll be stealing your white cockpit surround for my next one
