Blood Angels: sell me on them.

So I’ve been thinking about starting a blood angels army lately, but I’m not 100% sold on investing in a new army.

Some background: I started playing Thousand Sons when I was 16 (2001) and they are still my primary army and I’ve been working on them lately but as I was painting my magnus my wife got a look at him and got really unsettled (excessively so, but that’s not changing nor up for discussion) and really took the wind out of my sails for that army for a while.

I also have a tyranids army that I like, but I’m just not feeling right now.

My last army is a space wolves armyi got most of from my brother that I’ve really grown to not like since reading more of the 30k lore about Russ and the like so I’m thinking of selling it to finance a new army. I think I could probably get around 300$ for it on eBay.

I really like the noble hero archtype, and if they have a flaw to overcome (red thirst/black rage) its even better. I also like the idea that they play very differently as compared to my other armies (and even differently from the corgis as well).

Even the Thousand Sons at one time we’re trying to be noble hero’s and had things gone differently, they would still probably be noble hero’s.

I am hesitant mostly because of the monetary expenditure. So yes I’ll have the money from selling the hounds, and that’s a good start, but I’m wondering how far that will get me. If I was to start this army, its important to me to build it from scratch so I really don’t want to eBay an army.

Stickied at the top of the forum are a million reasons to play Blood Angels:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298566-why-play-blood-angels/page-16

They boil down to Blood Angels being the best. Best colours, best background, best primarch.

What exactly about Magnus disturbed your wife? If you discuss Blood Angels too much with her she may be equally disturbed...as with anything in 40k.

Well you basically already have all the best reasons to play Blood Angels listed yourself imo. :D

Also the combination of Red guys, Golden veterans and Black lost guys looks pretty awesome on the board imo. Way different than most other Marine armies. Only Dark Angels with their Green, Bone and Black wings get close to it.

Death Company, Sanguinary Guard, Librarian Dreadnoughts not to mention the various special characters are unique to Blood Angels and have unique models to go along with them. Taking a step out of the 40K fluff realm for a moment they are spectacular models with lots of details, a well painted Blood Angels army on the table top is a sight to behold. Red is a bold colour and if you throw in the black of the DC and gold of the SG... perhaps I am biased but I think it's a stunning army to collect.

In universe fluff-wise the Blood Angels are the most noble and selfless of Chapters and take after their Primarch in that regard. They are, quite clearly, the best army to collect. All the awesome Blood Angels players on this very forum can't be wrong. ;)

Well some people are just sensitive like that and trying to convince them usually does more harm than good in those cases unfortunately. As long as she doesn't go crazy and trashes your miniatures it's handlebar tho I guess. They are yours and not hers after all. ^^

$300 is about £220 which is more than enough to get going.

If I was starting from there, I'd probably get:

Betrayal at Calth (£95)

Death company (£20)

Sanguinary guard (£20)

10 jump packs (£10) from GW direct or a heresy lascannon pack from FW (£14?)

About £150

This gets you a whole bunch of stuff. 2*5 tactical marines with flamer+combi flamer, then 10 guys which can have 3 missile launchers from calth to make a dev squad.

The Terminators and contemptor are good, and the cataphractii captain is looking like a good pick this edition.

The spare jump packs from GW can be given to the chaplain and some.mk4 guys using spare chainsword arms from the death co set to make more assault marines.

Use the remaining £50 to add what you like the most, however I'd veer towards a transport like stormraven or 2* Razorbacks.

This is all GW RRP so you can probably find an online retailer to make your money go 15-25% further.

If you want to take the primaris route, get dark Imperium, split with a friend, or just get the marines. You can find these for about £40. This is a solid base to an army.

Add to this:

a repulsor (£50)

More hellblasters (£35)

Easy build aggressors (£15?)

Easy build Redemptor (£25?)

And you have a really solid army for under £200.

Hope this is some food for thought!

Well BA have a strong angelic theme running through them, which is the opposite of the daemon/chaos theme of the thousand suns. They have a darker side but that’s more a matter of fluff and rules rather than the models. Even the death company models are highly decorated.

Honestly that’s one of my main attractions to the army, the contrast of the beautifully decorated armour and the marine inside whose fighting the urge rip you apart and drink your blood.

If you like to read I would suggest picking up the novel Dante by Guy Haley it’s a great novel and as a bonus will give you a lot of info about the BA, plus there’s the excellent sequel Devastation of Baal which sets the stage for our latest codex, two great novels that will really help you get to know the BA

Paladin777,

Blood Angels seem a good fit for you in the grim darkness of the far future indeed.

Vampire Angels smiting Daemons to defend humanity for the win !!

Happy ladies are good to have around *nod.

Sell those chaos forces and don't look back man !!

Just make sure and let her know it's gone; when Magnus is sold, so she is not worried about it in the future and stuff.

You might want some of those space wolves things for useful bits and pieces for the kitbash perhaps.

Have a hard look thru anyhow while selling to perhaps have some sweet bits box fodder. Reuse Rhinos and such most likely.

Some great advice in here.

Second what Xenith advised.

Pandion40 also has great advice on the lore stuff to get ya jazzed about the best... your new army.

Audible on Amazon has many of the Black Library books in easy travelling... ummm audio book form if those please ya.

Couple free for Amazon Prime members too.

Nevermind... I'm not dumb enough to step into this trainwreck... mods please delete this post so it's not cluttering the thread.  Best of luck to the OP in every regard.  :)

Well, she said if she sees Magnus again it will be trashed... it’s a good thing I don’t have any daemons or spawn, nor do I wish to have any...

:jawdrop:

What??

Dude, I mention this next bit in all seriousness;

If your wife's issue with Magnus (or any Chaos Daemons) is in any way religious in nature, be warned - The Blood Angels codex is LOADED with pagan and quasi-blasphemous references.  For example:

-Mephiston  (special character....see Mephistopholes, Germanic folklore Demon/Devil)

-Dante...not pagan in and of itself, but highely evocative of "Inferno" the divine comedy, and all the themes of Hell/Abyss, etc. that it evokes

-Astorath (and the "Astartes" word in general), references the Babylonian/Egyptian/Assyrian goddess Ishtar...who was a major source of conflict with the Israelits of antiquity and commonly associated with Sexuality.

-Baal (the planet name and the Tank that Blood Angels have access to), has lots of associations to demons/devils/false gods, depending on how far back you want to go and which authors you want to subscribe to.

-Lucifer Engines (the overcharges engines of the Baal Tank which make them go faster...) Lucifer is of course the Hebrew, pre-fall name of Satan or the Devil.

I'm sure I could find more, but you might look more closely into this before laying out a lot of money.

It doesn't have to be religious nature. Some people are just very very sensitive about demon stuff and get unreasonably scared thinking about even the slightest chance it possibly being real in whatever kind or form etc.

It's honestly a tough situation. It's his wife and not just some friend and this is "just" a hobby so telling him to put his hobby above her feelings is wrong but at the same time since it's so unreasonable it's also not quite right to just bow your head and do whatever to please her.

However that's definitely something he has to figure out for himself and is not something that should be topic here! All I can say is he should talk with her real good about the situation and the future.

Hence why I said "If your wife's..."

I realize it doesn't have to be religious in nature. But on the (reasonably good) chance that it is, he needs to know that Blood Angels are loaded with language and themes that a religious person may find controversial.  That is neither a judgment of our Codex or religious people; it simply is.

she really just gets the most weird about the daemon aesthetic. I don’t actually intend to sell off my chaos either, just Magnus (sucks that I have 30ish hours into the paint job).

I plan on showing her pics of the models I intend to get prior to starting the army, possibly playing up the angel and artistic nature of the Angels. Since all the models look like guys in armor/walkers/tanks, it should be fine.

Which is kinda weird that especially Magnus freaks her out since he is still mostly human and more of a giant birdperson than basically every other daemon unit but it can't be helped I guess. I feel sorry for you but you know best how to handle the situation. It's your life and your wife after all.
