Hi guys I hope you can help me.

For a campaign / army project.

My friends get me back in 40k since 4-5 years I sold my stuff :(

To get it spicey it will be around the Badab War.

Actually I tend to the Executioners, a following Chapter from the fists, but prefers the close combat like Templars.

Here my problems begin:

- what chapter tactic should I use?

- how should an Army List look a like?

- what is "in or must have" 8th Edition and what the hell should I do with all the batallions and stuff?

I know it sounds like a bit weird or mimimi but I wanna play / build up this army in the campaign but I don't know how :(

Please help me guys .

Greetings Frank

Melee oriented but not with any sizeable advantage beyond our (pretty solid) HQ choices. Our CT doesn't actually help us in combat, just with getting there, and Crusader Squads don't pack enough punch to really slaughter stuff. C:SM is still a shooty codex at its core.

I would look at Forgeworld tactics...if those are still a thing?

Remember you can use the BT Chapter Tactics, without losing access to things like Librarian if you do not use the BT Keyword. However that said. You lose access to Crusader Squads and the Crusader Helm. Both of which are the primarily advantages/reasons to take Black Templar. And an easy Speciality Detachment because of the Emperor’s Champion.

Take Black Templars (Keyword) if your primarily goal is avoid having to pay a Tax on troop choices.

Honestly IF’s are great for firefights. While not melee inclined. Being able to ignore cover makes your units better in the firefight role. Which is what any SM army wants to be in.

The old Forge World rules for the Executioners had them:

  • ignore all negative modifiers to Ld, regardless of cause, and
  • character models with the Headhunters rule inflicted Instant Death on a To Wound roll of 6 in a Challenge (summary of the rule - there's a tiny bit more)
So I think that the basic suggestion is to modify these for 8th edition (in friendly games with your opponent's permission, of course).

From an army list lore perspective, if you're aiming for a melee-oriented Executioners army, you can simply say that it's an 8th Company (Reserve Assault) force or a force that draws heavily from that company. Your army basically represents one small contingent of a larger off-screen Executioners force. You can then compose the army appropriately, with a focus on the melee units. Any good force has some balance, though, so you still have the leeway to include whatever shooty units you feel are appropriate to the lore and necessary to army flexibility.

If one of your friends has a copy of Imperial Armour - forces of the adeptus Astartes it has 8th Ed rules for Thulsa Kane as a HQ option for the Executioners.

He looks decent stat wise, chapter master level stats with a good weapons load out and two auras to boost CC abilities
