Custodes Primers

Hey everyone!

 

I was searching for custodes pictures and found one that looked like someone had used a gold metallic primer. Does anyone have any experience with these primers? Are they okay to paint over with our water based paints? 

 

I just really enjoyed the sheen on the raised parts of the model that changed when viewed from different angles and was hoping to use that for my base on my Custodes then spray them with a varnish and paint the weapons, skin, etc over the varnish then varnish again. Or will the varnish ruin the sheen of the metallic primer? I don't mind using a gloss varnish but I'm concerned that it will look more like a polished car than metallic gold.
