I'll have to grab this when I'm home, but is that a claim to close out the heresy, or foreshadowing?

Author of the year? What else has Gav done?

Ghost Warrior and Jain Zar have knocked my socks off this year. Brilliant original and different 40k works that added to the feel and story of the galaxy in every way. Also Lorgar did the same for me.

I’ve found his books this year really refreshing!

Best part of the story :biggrin.:

“Frustrated, Malcador snatched up the Perfection and used it to sweep aside the Iron General. The opposing piece tumbled, the head crowned with sunbeams rolling across the board.
‘Clumsy,’ said Revelation. He picked up the two transmorphic pieces and set them back in the wooden box beside the board. ‘Perhaps I will fix that later when I have some time.”

I'd more say the Chosen is Horus, and the Lord of Hearts is Lorgar, given how the Lord is "supported by two figues", who would be Erebus and Kor Phaeron.

Also interesting to note is that they divide 20 pieces between themselves, not 18, and have 10 each, so some of these titles could be the missing Primarchs.

Edit: wait, no, Chosen is definitely Lorgar.

Just finished this, very interesting events. It's really well-written, and there are a few parts of it that seem to be open to interpretation based on what we already know about the Siege and what has been theorised. My thoughts are below:

The pieces/Primarch match ups seem pretty straight forward -

The Twins = Alpharius & Omegon

The Shadow = Corax

The King of Nothing = Angron

The Blind Darkness= Curze

The Hawk Soars = The Khan

Lord of the Clouds = Mortarion

The Chosen = Lorgar

Lord of Hearts= Horus

Perfection = Fulgrim

Iron General = Ferrus Manus

Uncrowned Monarch = Guilliman

Double-Edged Blade = The Lion

The Angel = Sanguinius

Invincible Bastion = Dorn

The Anvil = Vulkan

The Library = Magnus

Hungering Wolf = Russ

The Fool = Malcador

The Crown = The Emperor

Perturabo must have a piece, as do II and XI apparently, but he isn't mentioned. "The Wall" that is mentioned is a card, so it's an event and not a character, as the characters are represented by pieces. Given the context I think it represents Mortarion's willpower/resolve, which changes to the Corruption card (surprising Malcador, so the Emp knew that Mortarion has fallen to Nurgle's Rot but Malcador didn't).

Possible revelations:

- Vulkan is still a Perpetual (the Return card is placed back into the deck, not removed from the game)

- Some of the traitor Primarchs turn on each other during the Siege (Internecine Feud card)

- The Alpha Legion were playing the odds, and one of the twins was working against the traitors from the start (backs up "Alpharius was loyal" theory)

- If Dorn had been sent to Isstvan he would have (somehow) turned it in the loyalists favour, but the Alpha Legion would have committed entirely to Horus and taken Terra

The rest seems to play out the Siege as we know it:

- Fulgrim going after innocent civilians causes the Khan to leave the Palace to stop him

- Russ, Guilliman and the Lion are approaching quickly

- Sanguinius and Malcador both die to allow the Emperor to destroy Horus

The Emperor seems to have foreseen/predicted exactly what we already know as the traditional narrative of the Siege, but with a more positive ending. I got the feeling that either he doesn't realise how badly he is going to get beat, or something unforeseen happens and something goes wrong (maybe Ollanius Pius and the Perpetuals arc interferes?).

I'm sure someone from BL, possibly one of the authors, said that the Siege won't be exactly like it was in the old books and there'll be some suprises and twists. So far, the Emperor's prediction matches the old version pretty closely.

I hope we get to see Angron and Sanguinius actually fight

his fingers moving to the King of Nothing. He thrust it directly towards the Angel defending the Emperor's home squares...He turned the top card. The picture resolved upon its surface showed a mountain of bodies with a hound at its top, muzzle red with their blood. 'Massacre,' snapped Malcador.

Might just be Angron declaring the start of the siege though.

I am not sure how it can be done without changing things quite a bit (which we know is an option).

Sanguinius obviously has to fight horus, and Angron has to lead the World Eaters as they smash worlds on the way to the Eye.

I dont see either backing off when actually fighting.
