Guest
I recently got a box of scions and a tempestus start collecting as gift from my wife. So 10 scions, a scions command squad, a commissary and a Taurox Prime.I like the tempestus but they seem pretty pricy compared to what normal soldiers bring to the table. So I am not sure if it is achievable to have the mainstay of my force be Tempestus. If it is what would be good units to pair them with. I would love to have a air support style army but not sure how IG are doing other than Leman Russ lines. Also do I have to take the Tempestus Regiment rule. It seems to be pretty weak in my eyes. CaptainMarsh
This depends on what you mean in terms of viable. Can they, on their own, be a top competing army at any major tournaments? No. But having run them as a pure force since the start of 8th I can safely say that in a FLGS environment they can certainly hold their own, especially against armies that rely on smaller forces of elite units. But they can't effectively play as an army that can take on all comers. They require specialization, and that makes them weak to whatever they aren't outfitted to fight. A MT-only army is viable but has great weaknesses. I have a winning record in 8th but a lot of that is because my FLGS tends to field smaller, elite armies which the MT can fight well. In terms of support, I like to field Guard HS choices to compensate for what the Tempestus lack in your set-up. I like to run some Leman Russ tanks or Wyverns, but I recently won three games with a thousand points of MT in a Battalion and a thousand points of Heavy Weapon Squads in Spearheads. Guest
I don't plan on using just Tempestus I should say. Just using them as troops. I finally got a codex which didn't know there was a "Tempestus" keyword. I plan on using other equipment (valkyries/tanks/baneblade maybe), just using Tempestus Scions instead of Imperial Guard. I also don't plan on playing them competitively, just games with my local groups. I looked at Leman Russ's they seem to be the staple of the codex. I am thinking 2 squads in Valkyries, Leman Russ line, and maybe a baneblade variant. duz_
Scions as troops in a guard supported detachment certainly sounds viable. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/342838-tempestus-army-viable/#findComment-4972342 Share on other sites
