How do you do it?

More to the point, what foam transports do you use? I hope this is the right place for this question/topic.

I have a pretty large IG army and it keeps expanding. I stopped playing in 3rd but came back at the end of 7th. My 2 old GW hard plastic cases aren't doing it for me anymore. I want to fit 10 tanks, 2 flyers, and 100 grunts but I'm lost and could use guidance.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

I have two of the large GW hard cases for my infantry, for my tanks I have a variety of sizes of Sabol Army Transports. I primarily use an Army Transport Division case. It can fit about 18 tanks depending on what I'm transporting. I bought a couple aluminum camera cases at a hardware store (Canadian Tire) that is filled with pluck foam, and a Valkyrie/Vendetta is a perfect fit along with the flying base. They were pretty cheap too, I think I paid $25-$30 CDN for each of them. If you wanted to use them for tanks, you could probably fit 5 or 6 per case, depending on whether or not you have sponsons on your tanks.

I have two Battlefoam 720 cases, one for my Black Templars and another one for my Adeptus Mechanicus. They're fantastic for smaller elite armies, but they just aren't big enough for my Guard army (200+ infantry and 32 tanks and two flyers).

In addition to the Division, I have about 4 other standard Army Transport cases to store my tanks. I bring the Division with me to games and swap out the trays for whatever tanks I need that day. The Army Transport cases and trays are a fraction of the price of the Battlefoam ones. The individual trays are smaller, but they cost less than half the price. It's been a while, but I think I paid about $90 CDN for a standard Army Transport filled with trays.

If money isn't an issue, I would heartily recommend Battlefoam trays and cases. Being that I live in Canada, by the time I pay exchange, duty and shipping it's more than $300 for a 720 with enough trays to fill it. The trays are pretty expensive to buy separately too, around $50-$60 each in the end. It seems to be getting harder to find Sabol cases and trays in Canada for some reason so I might have to splurge for Battlefoam in the future if I need more cases or trays. There used to be plenty of options for figure cases, but unless I'm missing something, the number of options easily available in Canada has shrunk in recent years.

I do like the GW ones especially the crusaders.

They can fit plenty of troops and vehicles. Mine houses about 70+ cadians & scions. 6 HWTs. 5 taurox, 8 chimera / LR chassis. You do have to remove the insert trays but works well.

I've also started using these for flyers, basilisks and extra tanks.

They also come in high top lids which are handy. Probably should line it with foam at some point.

If you can decipher KRs website they're a bit more affordable than Battlefoam.

What's best for storing a super heavy? Looked at the kr Baneblade specific, but I don't think it's going to work with the Octoblade. Currently have it in an old shoe box, with all the parts wrapped in tissue/bubble wrap. Was planning on buying a cheap plastic toolbox/storage box and some foam I can cut out to fit the parts in. Have done similar for my tanks.

How to transport your regiment? With Chimeras of course

For my infantry, Scions, HWTs and such I use a Feldherr backpack.

For the vehicles, fliers and such I use a lot of plastic boxes stacked in my car, which sadly takes a long time to unload. Sabol has a solution to this.

I use KR cases, one normal size one can fit in 8 tanks. (if you need to transport basilisks, they have a specialized layer, but it reduces the maximum capacity by 1), In 2 cases i can transport:

Basilisk

Manticore

3 Hellhounds

3 russes + 6-7 turrets

2 sentinels

hades breaching drill

100 infantry

8 heavy weapon bases

+ some extra infantry and HWT thrown in the spaces for turrets i am not using or in the gaps with the sentinels.

They are around £35 BGP each, not sure how that translates across the pond with shipping.

I got some Battlefoam trays and they're great for fitting in infantry :) Otherwise the usual vehicle foam trays do well for tanks but for the larger tanks or the funny shaped ones that don't fit old boot boxes layered with bubble wrap and foam are perfectly serviceable :tu:

Secret trick, buy gun cases. They have foam, a ton of room, and are usually configurable. Best part about it is they are cheap.

You can get a full length rifle sized pelican container for $50-75 which should transport up to 2000 points. The foam may not be soft as KR but you can always just buy some trays and pop them in the case.

People might look at you funny, but just pop a bunch of nerd stickers on the side or an apple logo :P

I use 4`Sabol trays for my Baneblade and Shadowsword. They fit the Baneblade chassis with sponsons perfectly and there`s about 1 1/2" - 2" space on the end to accommodate the longer barrelled variants. The only issue is the antennae are too tall, so I cut them off and magnetized them, so I can pop them off when they go into the case.

it may sound dull but i use the basic big (think it's called crusade)  GW hardcase to move my infantry i'll admit it's not perfect but it lets me move thousands of points of infantry quite well and compact for the size

I don't like the idea of using compression to secure my models in the tray. Do you find that the thinner, or generally more fragile components get bent or broken in those cases?

Battlefoam is incredible. Everyone I play against is in awe of it. I got the 720 and the Pack+. I can fit a ton in it. I got some extra trays to swap out things depending on the list but I can carry a Valk, basilisk, Wyvern, 10+ HWTs, 8 Russes, and over 100 infantry models (including Bullgryn) if I bring both cases with zip together. Sadly, their best sales are on Black Friday. Edited by Colonel Cross
Have you guys had any success with cases that can transport large super heavies like Fellblades/Baneblades or a Minotaur? I look at some of the cases and they don’t seem tall enough to transport 40/50 Infantry, some large heavy weapons bases, and some tanks/superheavies.

Yes, shame they are so stingy the rest of the year.

I have the 1520XL and it holds 2 Valkyries, 1 Vendetta, 4 Leman Russ Tanks, 2 Hellhounds, 3 Chimeras, 2 Siege Drills, 18 heavy Weapon teams and over 200 Infantry. I now need to expand with a Pack Plus for the field artillery, 25 Death Riders and 6 Bullgryns. That’s my entire army minus another Valkyrie and two super heavies.

sorry for the slow reply but no i find that there is still a fair bit of breathing room in the foam even after it compresses it might be my cause (or the fact i have no bayonets on my models) but everything holds really well in the case

I love the GW Crusader(?) case (the biggest one). It is sufficient for what little I have left. I just love the zigzagy foam trays. It allows me to store oddly shaped models very well. The modular nature also helps to transport tanks. Take out the upper part, store infantry in the lower and four tanks on top. Works wonders. If anyone is interested, I can make some pictures of how how to fit in 2000-ish point of mech in there.
