So I took the leap and bought a bunch of Death guard stuff. I am looking to build a semi-competitive death guard army built around a core of plague marines.

I was wondering if I could get some advice on my 1500pt death guard army build:

BATTALION detachment (+3cp)

HQ-CHAOS LORD

powerfist, combi-bolter

HQ-MALIGNANT PLAGUE CASTER

Troop- 5 PLAGUE MARINES

3 plasma guns

troop- 5 PLAGUE MARINES

2 Blight launchers

troop- 20 poxwalkers

elite- 5 BLIGHTLORDS TERMINATORS

3 combi-bolters, Blight launcher, 4 bubonic axes, 1 flail of corruption

elite- FOUL BLIGHTSPAWN

--------------------------------------------------

OUTRIDER Detachment (+1cp)

HQ- DAEMON PRINCE of NURGLE

wings, 2 malefic talons, Arch contaminator, suporating plate

FA- BLOAT DRONE

2 plague spitters

FA- BLOAT DRONE

2 plague spitters

FA- BLIGHT HAULER

the plan is to use a standard hammer and anvil style strategy.

The Hammer

The hammer part of the force consists of the Daemon prince w/wings and 2 bloat drones. These move up quickly up a flank and put early pressure on the enemy. the drones protect the prince from being targeted, while the DP buffs the drones with arch contaminator (auto hit +re-roll wounds)

The anvil

The anvil consists of the slow moving poxwalkers as chaff, the two squads of plague marines, the chaos lord, the blightspawn, plague caster and blight hauler. the chaos lord buffs the plague marines and plasma overcharge, the blight haulers also buff the PM and poxwalkers. Plague caster will also helps with buffs and adds some offense. Anyone who gets too close will be hosed by the blightspawn. These guys move up the center field taking objectives and eventually supporting the hammer.

The reserves

The Blightlords will be in reserve and will likely deepstrike to hotspots and maybe act as a go between the hammer and the anvil.

Adding another 500pts in the future, i'll likely substitute the plaguecaster for Typhus (to support the blightlords), 5 more plague marines w/ 2 melta guns, another bloat drone with Fleshmower, A chaos rhino (for the melta marines and blightspawn) and maybe a twin hellbrute with twin Las and ML.

let me know what you think!

It's a 3 point upgrade over the axe as you also "trade in" the combi-bolter. Gives +1 strength, +1 damage, changes your attack profile to 2-6 AND damage can spill over. So you go from 2 wounds damage maximum with axe or sword to worst attack case 4 and best attack case 12 wounds with the flail.

3 points. You lose the combi-bolter though...

I actually like the flail for two reasons...It looks awesome and also helps the blightlords to deal with chaff units. I'm of the opinion that it is undercosted for what it brings (much like the blightspawn). Also the fact that the blightlords in my list are essentially there to be anti-infantry with only combi-bolters and axes and so the flail makes sense in this case.

The only the thing that worries me about this list is lack of dedicated Anti-tank (a usual deathguard weakness)

The daemon prince (7x str7, -2ap 2d), blight hauler, plasma guns and a bunch of blight launchers. The blightspawn and spitter drones can also provide AT in a pinch, but the blightspawn lacks mobility and range at the moment, however In a 2000pt list he would be in a rhino with some melta gun plague marines for tank/monster hunting.

Played Grey Knights at the weekend (2k).

Flail helped delete a LAS Razorback, along with the Strikes within it and then managed to charge Draigo (who killed Typhus - grrrr) and the flail which I swung first deleted Draigo (2 wounds left).  Was a good game which DG won.

Hmm..Do you think maybe a single combi-melta on the blightlord champion would be worth it? I might consider a single melta, but I find that having 3-4 meltas or even plasma in the unit makes the unit too expensive (300+pts).... If the unit had better mobility, I would be more willing to swallow that kinda cost for a single unit.

I've decided to go with a "Pallid hand" type paint scheme for my army.

To be honest I haven't had too many issues just using plasma.

I tend to drop them with 3 combi plasma, blight launcher and flail.  I will pick a supporting target I want go and then drop in.  You get 6 plasma shots (no overcharging) and two with the BLauncher.  They do a fair bit of damage and then if they get the charge 9/10 they will finish target off in CC.

Don't know about Draigo vs Typhus being fun.....I have lost that CC battle twice now.  That being said the best bit was when he charged 5 man terminator unit and voldus into my 20 strong poxwalkers.  They made an unholy amount of DR saves and then with +1 to hit and VOTLW they deleted 3 of the 5 terminators...who then became poxwalkers.  Fun times.

Probably....but it looks cool so I can live with it lol, plus I have the other terminators from the EZB kit so I can remove the blight launcher model and use a different one (axe or sword) as combi plasma.

We don't play very competitive...more for the fun.

I actually like the Blight launcher because it has some great attributes. It gets very well with a few combos... vets of the long war, and people seem to forget it is a plague weapon so I usually take the reroll plague weapon command trait and I really find it works well with the Cataphractii. Plays at 24” and an assault weapon you can usually find range to shoot something. To be honest if I could take 2 in a squad, I would. Edited by Prot
