Chaos space marine question (character wargear)

So I just bought the codex the other day, and I'm looking through and the Exalted Champion and Chaos lord can not take Combi weapons, but can I take just a straight Bolter? I know that's a 'waste' but it's for a specific character of mine who is, in his hearts, a "Bolter jock" who got 'lucky' (perpetual). I was specifically looking at making him a Exalted Champion.

 

I can go with a plain Combibolter but it would just feel a little more his style running with the marines to have a regular Bolter.
