Maschinenpriester's portable gaming table - WIP Tread

Recommended Posts

Greetings Brothers,

I decided to share the progress I made on a recent project with you guys. Hope you like It.

I Decide to start the construction of a gaming board after my painted up miniature collection hit the mark of 2000 points.

I started the Project in December. I Wanted to make Gaming table which fits in my car's Trunk and I wanted to have a good compromise between weight and look. Also it should not be to to expensive.

It consists of  two halves with the dimensions of 900x1200 mm.The Board is made from 3 mm MDF  which is supported by a heavy frame. Both sides wil be put together with hinges, so they can fold together.

Material costst so far have been around 50 € - Not too bad.

After gluing and screwing everything together it's weight was approximately 12 kg

I started adding sand, some bits and hard foam with some mixed PVA glue to the FIrst half of the board.

I am planning to get some ruined urban look. Also with a part that looks a bit trenchy.

Besides one Plan was to leave some elevated squares as bases for buildings. To ensure the maximum modularity while mainining a good look and texture i plan to leave the highes elevation on the board aroum 6 mm, so that no big gaps will turn up if i place a 20x20 mm building base on the board.

After I had the problem that the sand did not stick to the MDF I tried sevral things to fix that...

So I used a mixture of 50/50 PVA glue and Water + Some paint + some dish cleaning liquid.

This way the sand is scured and the board gets very sturdy as i can tell at this point.

I just used too much water. As a result the MDF soaked full of water and expanded and warped through tension. Thanks to the strong frame the Deformation was not a big ussue. A little hill formed in the middle which might result in some wobblyness if I want to place terrain on it. But it makes the board look even more natural.

This week I continued with the Secon half of the board. I plan to give that a bit more urban / Industrial look, but still rusty and ruined to fit the other half.

This way I think the other side will be a good setting for some nice Kill team or even necromunda games!

  • 2 weeks later...

Time to show the Progress I made with the second half of the board!

I Started forming some sort of base for a Power core/ Reactor/ SHield generator in the middle.

I used some old cables and tubes i had lying around.

I also added some light craters, ruble and bits to add more depth and texture.

Today I finished adding stuff to the board, and secured the sand on the board, adding the basecoat in the same step. This time i did not overdo it with the water in order to prevent the MDF from warping. I also airbrushed the Plasticard areas, and painted the tiles black.
