Diagramdude
With regards to the Ultramarine angle, the key to this strategy is having a large enough pool of command points to work with. That's why Guard is great because of the sub 700 point brigade options. However, Sergeant Telion is only 75 points and could be part of a cheap UM scout battalion, yes BA scouts are significantly better in CC but the tactical role of infiltrate/deepstrike deny would be just fine with 3x5 UM scouts, sergeant telion, and probably one librarian to pass out the better Librarius buffs. Librarian Sergeant Telion 3x5 Scouts comes to 336 points to get you the CP regen WL trait, 3CP, Veil of Time/Might of Heroes, and the scout bubbles. Make it 366 and each scout squad can have a heavy bolter for Hellfire Shells. tkni
I think I'd want the Sanctic Halo for the extra denial (and free storm shield) if I were going down that route, which locks you into a captain. As, if I understand correctly, your initial 'free' relic would have to come from C:SM, and you'd be paying CP for *any* BA relics, not just the second or third. UM scouts as backfield objective sitters makes sense though, given any BA scouts should be geared towards CC anyway. Are the 2 extra CP from running a battalion worth the ~100 points you'd save running min-squad veterans in a vanguard? Or, rather, if for simplicity's sake you only use 1CP stratagems, you should get 0.6r CP back for each spent. So a fitting in a battalion over a vanguard gets you an extra 1.3r CP from the farm; a brigade an extra 4CP on top of that. Hah, so if you squeeze in an AM brigade, it's effectively worth +15CP, whereas a UM battalion (at half the cost) is +5CP.... The Unseen
It would only work if the DKOK Marshal can select the Grand Strategist WL trait from the Astra Militarum codex. If not, then you're outta luck. I believe the DKOK has access to the generic Guard warlord traits and relics, but I'm having trouble finding where I read that officially, and am not sure whether Grand Strategist or Kurovs Aquila are generic choices, or regiment specific. I don't own the guard dex, just the index for DKOK, hence my confusion. tkni
C:AM states relics and warlord traits are available to <Astra Militarum> warlords, which would include DKOK. Kurov's Aquila is restricted to officers only, Grand Strategist has no further conditions. Diagramdude
Tkni, I'd say paying for 3 scouts is worth it because they have a strong tactical role in your army beside the CP generation. If you were really skimping points with 3 2man vet squads, then I'd say go all the way and just take telion and 1 scout squad for a 130pt patrol detachment. Telion is actually quite a solid sniper with a 36" Heavy 2 S4 -1 D3 weapon that can target characters at BS2+, he also gives +1 to hit to a UM SCOUT unit within 3, so a sniper squad next to him with 4 snipers and a HB for hellfire shells would be actually quite productive while camping an objective in cover.
