So i had a funky idea.

With the rising cost of Assault Cannon Razorbacks and the dropping cost of Inceptors, why not give those bad boys a try.

This is the list i have in mind:

Battalion Detachment:
Shrike - 150

Librarian - Jump Pack, Force Sword, Bolt Pistol - 120

Scout Squad - 5 man - Bolters - 55
Scout Squad - 5 man - Bolters - 55
Scout Squad - 5 man - Bolters - 55

Scout Squad - 5 man - Snipers, Missile launcher - 96

Scout Squad - 5 man - Snipers, Missile launcher - 96

Scout Squad - 5 man - Snipers, Missile launcher - 96

Outrider Detachment:
Lt - Jump Pack, Thunder Hammer, MC Boltgun - 102
Inceptors - 3 man - Plasma Exterminators - 177

Inceptors - 3 man - Plasma Exterminators - 177

Inceptors - 3 man - Assault Bolters - 135

Inceptors - 3 man - Assault Bolters - 135

Inceptors - 3 man - Assault Bolters - 135

Stormtalon Gunship - TAssault Cannon, TLascannon - 204

Stormtalon Gunship - TAssault Cannon, TLascannon - 204

Total: 1992
Model Count: 50
CPs: 7

So the plan is that the sniper scouts will deploy on rear objectives, whilst the bolter scouts infiltrate forward. In either case, infiltration will be to screen the Stormtalons.

The jump pack guys will all be in deepstrike reserve and come down on together for the re-rolls and dakka.

The stormtalons will most likely be hovering to shoot at harder targets. Alternatively, they can advance to where they are within range of the bubbles of Shrike and the Lt.

I know there's an issue with assault, however, if i shoot well enough, i won't have to do too much assaulting.

A couple of questions/thoughts.

For a more "competitive" version of this list, should i swap out Shrike for a Captain with Thunderhammer & Stormshield? And then try to find points to add Celestine & Co. in an Auxiliary Detachment?

Other than that, what do you guys think i could/should modify?

4 lascannons and 3 missiles seems a bit weak for anti tank.

Alternative list idea.

Battalion.

Shrike 150

Captain Beatstick, TH/SS, jump pack, Shield Eternal.  <-- make him your warlord and give him the +1w and 6+++

Scouts x 5, bolters 55

Scouts x 5, bolters 55

Scouts x 5, bolters 55

Scouts x 5, bolters 55

Tacticals x 5, lascannon, 90

Tacticals x 5, lascannon, 90

Outrider

LT, pack, stormbolter, chainsword. 80

Inceptors x 3, bolters, 135

Inceptors x 3, bolters, 135

Inceptors x 3, plasma, 177

Inceptors x 3, plasma, 177

Air Wing Detachment.

Stormtalon Gunship, twin assault cannons, twin las.  204

Stormtalon Gunship, twin assault cannons, twin las.  204

Stormtalon Gunship, twin assault cannons, twin las.  204

So with this list you gained... 4 lascannons but lost 3 missile launchers.  You lost 18 shots of assault bolters but gain 12 assault cannon shots.  You lost psychic defense(1 deny roll) and poopy space marine psychic powers but gained a beatstick captain that will kill stuff.  You also gained 1 command point.  I think that is a good trade.

Now that is a very interesting list indeed...

Would you say that Shrike is expendible? Perhaps remove him and replace him with something else? Perhaps even another squad of Bolter Inceptors?

I don't think Shrike is expendable. In this list, you have two big chunks that will benefit from rerolls, the Talons (especially if you get them moving) and the plasmaceptors. I think it would be wise to stick Shrike with the Talons as long as you can, deep striking him in turn 1 if you need to.

Captain Beatstick will probably DS with the Inceptors and give them reroll 1s for the alpha strike before getting stuck in.

Personally, sniper scouts have been more useful than a single, non-signum boosted Lascannon. But then again YMMV.

The only thing keeping space marines on the margins of competition is their insane accuracy from reroll auras.  That being said... keep shrike and the LT together and call them Budget Guilliman.  Shrike is fast so he can be where you need him for rerolls to hit and even charge.  Your beatstick captain can also fill in some reroll duty.  Shrike also gives you some very efficient MEQ removal in CC.  Just dont expect him to punk Mortarion.

With the release of the Custodes codex, i've had a look at their rules and i gotta say: Shield-Captains on jetbikes look pretty violent!

This is the latest iteration of this list:

LT - JP, stormbolter, chainsword (Teeth of Terra) - 80
Scouts x 5, bolters 55
Scouts x 5, bolters 55
Scouts x 5, bolters 55
Inceptors x 3, plasma, 177
Inceptors x 3, plasma, 177
Inceptors x 3, plasma, 177

@Race:

Misericordia is +1A per model, with power sword stats IIRC.

What do you guys think?

Well, I thought the same thing, and tried the triple jetbike captain last friday.

Didn't get as much mileage out of them as their points would suggest. Kept them behind the first line to make them untargetable, which meant they needed until turn 2 to reach something, which didn't work well against a brutal firepower gunline. One was diverted as counter charge unit and performed admirably, killing 2 squads of 3 inceptors in 2 rounds, the others got stuck trying to kill vehicles in CC, after the chaff died. Wounding vehicles on a 5+ in CC is unreliable even with rerolls. Also, the missile launcher is questionable to me. One shot quickly gets diverted by invuls or not rolling the 3+ to hit, but 12 shots S4 at 2+ to hit will make short work of any chaff units around.

My next trial will feature a vertus praetor squad of 3, with hurricane bolters. Only half the points of 3 captains, and similarly untargetable when using the deep strike stratagem, while having more attacks in CC than two captains would. That way, they don't need to be shielded by other units, not bogging down the other part of the list.

One way the captain would be of use is as counter-charge. Keep behind your lines, and you'll reach any deep strikers or vanguard units in one round, decimate the squishier ones with hurricane bolters (chances are, your opponent won't drop Leviathans), and lock up/beat up the rest in CC. But I guess that can be done reasonably by one, not 3.

To still get chapter tactics on my marines (when fielding a jetbike squad), I'll take a FA detachment with tarantulas. Those are cheap, reasonably resilient, and can prevent deep strike in the backfield by being expendable.

On Misericordia and totally OT:

I played EverQuest for years and that was the guild name.

Regardless, it's a very rare word indeed!

I wonder how to counts-as the jetbikes ...

That is BOSS!!!

Seriously what's the best "counts as" idea here. I'd prefer something SM codex related but ... just wow (freaking Custodes ;))
