TheCastigator
Hey all, Happy to report that I tabled a 2000 pt tallarn guard list today. Admittedly I was down on maelstrom points, but that doesn’t really matter in the end. My list 2000 pts Battalion Draigo - purge, astral aim Voldus - gate, purge, vortex Warlord GMDK - hammer, psycannon, psilencer, teleporter, first to the fray, sanctuary 2x5 strike falchions, gate 6 strikes - hammer, psilencer, gate 3x Razorback lascannon Apothecary relic hammer, hammer hand Paladins - hammer paragon, 1hammer, 2 falchions, 4 halberds, hammer hand His list - I am missing some stuff here, but this is the gist, he had multiple detachments, not sure what was where. inquisitor Eversor assassin Yarrick 3 co commanders 2 astropaths Priest 5 crusaders 4-5 infantry squads 1 special weapons squad 2 vet squads 10 scions Basilisk Auto cannon leman russ 3xHB Regular Russ 3xHB 2x 3 las cannon heavy weapon teams 2 chimera Mission was spoils of war, frontline assault deployment I held everything in reserve but my razors and strikes. He outflanked a chimera with all his vets,a commander, and a special weapons squad, as well as a another infantry squad Chimeras are actually really good for this, as he jammed it full of Melta and flamers. Turn 1 I won the roll to first. I crammed 3 razors with strikes in my left corner in cover. Popped one 5 man squad out and cast gate on another razor to get it half way up the left table edge. I damaged the basilisk opposite my razor backs and one of the lemans. I also shot the unit screening the basilisk. I held all reserves. He didn’t have much to shoot but by moving the one razor up I blocked his out flank from using the left short edge. He had deployed his tanks, 2 infantry squads, 2 commanders, yarrick, astropaths, and heavy weapon teams in the far corner opposite me. However, between the heavy weapons and basilisk he killed one Razorback. He also took 4 wounds off another. All in all not bad. He did make 2 key errors. He didn’t bring reserves in and didn’t move his screening units by his tanks out. He did move the basilisk screen out. He dropped scions to claim a mid-board objective and his eversor to go after my strikes in the building in my left corner. He charged the Razorback I gated up the table with the basilisk screen and locked it against the terrain piece I was using for cover. Turn 2 I drop everything in right in front of his leman russes. I used vortex with channeling and rolled an 11 for a final score of 12! I did 4 Wounds to the screen 5 to one tank and killed an astropath. I then cast purge with draigo and killed 4 more of the screen. I cast astral aim on the paladins they cleared one heavy weapon squad that was in a building and the dread knight’s psilencer killed the other, woo d3 damage. I also finished the battle cannon russ off with the psycannon, got pretty lucky between that and the vortex. I then charged the screen with paladins, apothecary, and dread knight. Draigo and voldus failed. I wiped the screen and consolidated into remaining russ, 2 commanders and yarrick. Rerolling saved my bacon on the charges. One strike squad used gate to get in range of the scions. I used psybolt since they were in cover. I only killed 3. I moved the other strike squad to free my other razorback, since it was pinned in combat with a squad inside. He was feeling the pressure and jumped his crusaders and priest out of the chimera I couldn’t reach with consolidation. I blocked all his powers except for the +1 save, which gave the crusaders a 2+ invulnerable. Not sure if that was right. They charge the paladins and kill 4! He didn’t do much shooting. He killed one strike from the squad I moved to get the scions. He also brought his reserves in — the chimera near my Razorback corner and the other foot units on the right edge to shoot at the units I deep struck in, he also brought in another unit to screen the basilisk. I smashed yarrick with my dread knight on his turn, which was hilarious. The eversor managed to shoot charge and kill the strike squad that shot at the scions, brutal. Turn 3 I moved voldus up to cast gate on the remaining paladins. I moved draigo to get the chimera that was on the right side of the board. Dread knight moved to charge the auto cannon russ and the apothecary moved to get my opponents warlord. I charged the unit holding my razor back. I also moved the razor back in my corner out of my deployment zone to get away from the melta vets that just whiffed against it. I gated the paladins out of combat to shoot at the scions, who were then wiped out by morale. I cast purge on the crusaders wiping all 5. I killed the warlord commander, auto cannon russ, and chimera in combat. Before charging, my dread knight shot the 2 squads that came in from reserve or out of the chimera, I don’t remember which, leaving 3 alive. I also shot and managed to charge the new basilisk screening unit with a strike squad and touched the basilisk with my pile in. At this point I was up on maelstrom points 9-8. My opponent then shot and charged voldus with the eversor. Voldus lost 2 wounds and then promptly chomped that assassin. Ouch. He took some pot shots, but couldn’t do much damage to anything. The main problem this turn was that he drew an objective card for the one he was standing on and area denial, which he rolled 3 on the d3! It was a 4 point swing. At the end of the round it was 12-9 for guard. Turn 4 I managed to mop up the most of the rest of his army this turn. I moved strikes back to shoot at the unit that had moved into my left corner after their out flank. I gated voldus over there, he purged the chimera to death, which was damaged by a las cannon. My paladins charged the front of the basilisk and killed it. My opponent moved his remaining 5 models into a building corner so I had to gate into the corner of the board so could shoot them with enough guys to kill them all. Turn 5 We played out the turn to see if I drew objectives that would let me win on points. I didn’t. Voldus moved up and purged the last 4 guardsmen and my strikes gated into the building and shot the commander to completely table him. The final maelstrom score was 13-11 for guard. Lessons learned. I got pretty lucky that my opponent didn’t move his screen out from his fire base. A 4 inch move would have had me sitting there waiting to be shot. Purge is awesome against low and mid-leadership units. It definitely helped make up for some lost smites. About the beta rules — it had ZERO effect this game. I still managed to cast 5 smites in one turn and 3 or 4 otherwise. Paladins remain the shiz. Dreadknights are still the best unit in the book, but a monster unit of paladins just wrecked everything they touched. That’s all for now, but I was happy to see that we can still wreck face, especially given the recent consternation and frustration with the book. duz_, 4ndroid, Kallas and 1 other 4 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/343813-grey-knights-v-tallarn-2000-pts/ Share on other sites
