Thanks so much.  I wasn't aware of that resource.  It is on eBay but its a bit expensive!  :ermm:

Maybe someone can just help me out with couple of questions:

First, for troops the symbol in the 40K book looks like a triangle while the symbol for a dedicated transport is an upwards arrow so why do people put the upwards arrow on the right shoulder pad of UMs?

Second, for a Rhino/Razorback combo vehicle.

It should have an upward arrow right?  Should it be on the top or just the doors?  I have seen both ways.  Also, what does the yellow circle with roman numerals indicate?

Thanks so much!

Steve.

The symbol for a troops choice is a triangle and the symbol for a dedicated transport is an upwards facing arrow with a superimposed skull. This is common across all armies from the Emperor-blessed Space Marines and Imperial Guard to the nasty xenos and contemptible heretics.

Amongst the Codex Astartes compliant chapters, the insignia for a Space Marine tactical squad or intercessor squad is an upwards pointing arrow with the squad number inside. Assault/close support squads have the dual pointed crossed arrow and devestator/fire support has a upwards pointing chevron. These can be rendered in different ways based on the squad. The Codex Astartes symbol for a dedicated transport is the same as its assigned squad. A Rhino with a tactical squad would have an upwards pointing arrow with the same squad number, whereas a Rhino for a devastator squad would have a upwards pointing chevron. Razorbacks would have the same markings as Rhinos. Many Rhinos have the marking on the front glacis and on the top doors, but each Rhino is different. The colored roundel indicates the company that the vehicle is assigned to. A white roundel with a black I is first company, yellow with a black II is second company, red with a white III is third company, etc. For some reason, the decal sheets only have the second company colors. Each vehicle also has an identification number for the armoury, which is also a roman numeral.

Pages 14-15 of the current codex will also answer all of your questions! They go in-depth with heraldry and icons.

- All tactical markings (i.e. squad type) are placed on the right shoulder pad; the Chapter icon is placed on the left should pad.

- The symbol for Tactical Squads is an upward arrow. A transport will often have the same tactical markings as the squad they carry, so a Tactical Squad's transport will have an upward arrow, while a Devastator Squad's transport will have a triangle (the Devastator icon).

- Marking placement on vehicles. A colored roundel with the company number will be on the front right, while the campaign marking will be on the front left (reversed orientation on the rear; roundel on rear left, campaign marking on rear right). The squad's markings can go anywhere, but on the front somewhere and/or flanks is typical.

Thanks guys for all the help.  I think I understand the markings a bit better.  I am just starting 40K with my youngest son and I often get information overload!

Cheers, Steve.
