thinking possible solution to anti-vehicle conundrum....

dark angels master with jump pack

unit of scouts (always useful)

5-6 plasma inceptors?

those guys will wreck anything, especially with weapons from the dark ages.  I think like using guard for bodies, custodes also have to look outside our codex for efficient T7-8 busting

While nice - it requires command point investment (mostly) which is something Custodes need all to themselves.

Can't argue with the mobility and firepower though.

I still think the best of both worlds is an AdMech battalion with 3x5 rangers with an arquebus each and maybe adunecrawler with neutron. Little bit more expensive than the guard but those arquebus are versatile, hitting tanks and characters. Make them stygies and they get a bit more durable too against return fire.

I’d run two crawlers.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. A basic AdMech Battalion with Vanguard/Rangers Grab first turn Shroudpsalm add two Neutron Dunecrawlers and Bobs your uncle.

I actually struggle with my AdMech and when Custodes first came out I thought they would terrible and I was wrong. I actually envisioned Master of Mankind as I was building this force to go along with my AdMech.

Just the problem is still always going to be CPs for me. I love Blood Games, tangle grenades, etc.

I actually thought the opposite, I thought theyd be rediculous ingame, almost like they are in 30k, but theyre probably decently middle of the pack. I like that, the one thing I hate though is how good bikers are, meaning custodes are basically monobuild. The only thing in the book thats really bad is the raider, its just that bikers are SO good theyre in every single list, and most of the time ARE the list.

I run a custodes battalion for CP, and Im planning on supplimenting it with AdMech and a vanguard with greyfax and a culexus. 10CP should be enough for any shenanigans I want to run. I'm honestly thinking valoris might be worth investing in, he is probably the cheapest way to get 1-3 extra CPs at 100pts extra on top of a shield captain (not that anyone takes them).

I'd say Aquebus probably aren't that amazing without a decent number, but then they get expensive...

I think about it from the point of view of the detatchment costs, paying 60pts for a unit of skitarii that can sit back and snipe characters at 60" range is decent in my book.

Bikers are great and every list should have some but there are not monobuild.

Custodes are pretty monobuild at the moment, we're not seeing a huge range of deviation from the core of bikes and biker SCs.

AdMech are great allies.

But for me every time I consider something else but Guard a voice in the back of my head goes "Grand Strategist & Kuro'v Aquilla." (Yes AdMech can get CP back, but its horrible compared to GS).

I actually kinda hope both are nerfed in the Faq to stop IG from being the defacto soup choice.

I think a huge issue with admech is their relative uselessness of their HQs. Enginseers are cheap but don't really do anything, unlike Tempestus primes or AM officers. Dominus is just a little too pricey for what you get IMO, hes decent at close ranges with his loadout, but its unlikely your rangers are getting anywhere close.

I think everything will start competing for points with Cawl. I use Cawl all the time and he's a bit frustating because you're paying for a lot of abilities but the one you are banking on is just the reroll aura (only in shooting phase too unfortunately).

If I had some sort of identifiable looking Astra force, I'd try a little Battalion and this extra CP trick... I had my opponent use it on me my last game yesterday... very annoying. He's got a chance of gaining on my use and his use. (I think it was a 5 up??? or is it a 6?) Anyway very handy. But what do you do with the rest of the force? That's where I do like AdMech's superior BS and I love the Neutron Onager.

Not to mention that does open up the cheap Sicaran Infiltrators. Not a bad unit with Wrath of Mars. Just thinking out loud here but I don't think AdMech is terrible... just probably a less efficient choice compared to Astra, but Astra is incredibly potent this edition I find.

Hard to beat the points efficiency of 2 commanders and 30 infantry and a few mortars. Culexus as per choice. That’s not a lot of points for backfield holding, taking up space. Bit of screen. 3 CP. two ways of regenerating or earning more CP. and lasguns do kill stuff en masse. One unit of 10 canhold two objectives if you placed them well.

I also find nobody ever shoots them. Cause guess what. Custodes in your face.

Whose net listing? People were playing guard with Custodes long before geoff did well at adepticon lol. It’s the most natural combination. I’ve certainly tried many many lists and always tend to gravitate back to same stuff.

I don’t really know if anyone was questioning your originality here, but probably using Adepticon as a reference for how potent the combo can be. And as a result people gravitate towards those builds.

I know by habit I tend to go in a different direction and try for something that may catch people off guard. I can only speak for myself but when I was more competitive I would win with something very unique to me and often did not do well with something commonly thought of as potent.

Personally I’d like to try them with a very potent Psychic Force... my Grey Knights sit in a box now...probably a bad idea. But Knights are just around the corner. I kept two of my Armigers. If they fix them, that might be a cheap super heavy detachment that can fill the heavy shooting gap.

For Cawl to be worth it I feel like you need a lot of points in AdMech to get enough benefit from the Canticles modifier, and a good sized unit of dakkabots to go with him, which also racks up points fast. You can probably do it as an AdMech force with some Custodes Captains but don't have the points as a Custodes force with some AdMech allies.

And yes the other HQ's are either useless or to expensive for just their re-roll aura.

The 'normal' Netlist Guard detachment is indeed a complete wet noodle. I hate it, a bunch of mortars doesn't do anything. Which is why I run Plasma Scions instead.

And the CP trick is 5+ per enemy stratagem and 5+ per your own CP (No one else can do per CP and some other factions only work on a 6+). Guard has the best option in both.

And yes CP are not everything but I run Custodes with BA and boy that captain is hungry.

keep in mind, in ITC format (which is what a lot of people play in tournaments), the mortar is in fact most useful for denying secondary points (since it turns 10 man into 9 man unit).  If your mortars actually kill something then bonus.

I think its important to remember to take ITC tournaments with a grain of salt as far as armybuilding goes, as most of us, especially in europe, don't use their format.
