Weekender News. 30k Going to 8th...Eventually.

I like 7th, but if they choose to update to 8th once everything's done than that's fine, probably...

My main worry would be that HH is effectively finite in what they can do, isn't it?  There's loads of theatres they could choose to flesh out later, different battles for the thousands of planets that Horus burned across the Imperium on his road to Terra.  Add to that the HH line is presumably lucrative for FW are they just going to let it get to the Siege(or Scouring, whichever), port the whole lot to whatever the current edition is and go "yep, we're done with this"?

From the stand point of a business it wouldn't make sense (despite them having other revenue streams).  If you're throwing out books at £70 a throw and most people, if they're anything like me, are going to want the full set, even if it doesn't have rules/content for my Legion in it, simply because my particular brand of OCD demands I can't start a set and not have the entire thing.

I could see them stringing out a series of campaign books, at least as long as they keep selling, but if they've switched to x edition are they just going to support the current edition? Will they release 2 versions of each book? or would each book have 2 sets of rules in?

Granted a large part of my concern is pure conjecture at this point but its something I could see them doing.  That said, its not like I'm going to stop playing... I'm far, far too deep into this resin crack habit for me to quit.

You can't trust that the rules in the black book are going to last. The rules in the first black book was for 6th edition so it's already too late on that point :smile.:

If they switch to a new edition they are probably just going to release a new red book with the rules.

I'm not too worried about FW running out of material. I mean, we just got book 7 and it covers events before the Heresy technically even starts. Books 8 and 9 will cover the Blood Angels and Dark Angels prior to Imperium Secundus (which is established almost halfway through the war), and the entry of the White Scars into the story. And we haven't gotten a Martian Civil War book yet, also a very early event. So let's say 10 books in ~8 years to cover the first half of the war. And the book release rate has slowed since the start.

In addition to Mars, I'd expect books for Imperium Secundus and the Blood Angels' return to Terra, Tallarn (tanks tanks tanks!), Molech + the White Scars' return to Terra, Beta-Garmon (Adeptus Titanicus's black book), Anvilus and other late-war battles (maybe Mortarion’s surrender to Nurgle), the Solar System itself (BFG returns?), and then 3 books for the Siege (early, late, and the third could be Webway War + Vengeful Spirit). That's easily 20 books total, taking us through 2030.

We'll all be embarrassingly old by the time they get to the Emperor's duel vs. Horus. Then will come the Scouring. It has to, at least to cover Caliban and the retaking of Mars. And if you look at the Heresy and the Scouring as a single war, Horus's death is only the turning point and the midpoint, not the end. It's more analogous to Stalingrad in 1942 - the death and destruction only ramped up after that.

Oh, that is my keyword. :)

The answer is simple and yet so awesome:

Unification Wars!

I see unification wars being a tad difficult or potentially very easy.  They can just create a bunch of Earth factions based on the Necromunda gangs, so you can use that model range to beef out your forces.

Otherwise it would basically be an extended version of the Militia list from 30K, with various doctrines to choose from to tailor your "puny humans".  Instead of Legions, you could use Mk2 marines as generic thunder warrior models with like +1S and T or something.

Now Horus Heresy can truly be the "historic" game it is often described as, since it is using a historic rule-set as well as dealing with "ancient history".

And I may add:

Is played by ancient people. :tongue.:

I am okay with this. The rest of you can sit at the children's tables. :P
Oh I am one of the ancients. :)
Wait, I’m 25. Where do I sit?!

I play that game for almost 25 years now, so...

Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!

At the Weekender last year Tony and Alan said the whole series would be 15-20 Black Books long, obviously the bottom line being as long as they still sell and such.

What the..?

For real?

Yeah. This did happen. No joke.

Frankly, I hope it’s true. The longer the better IMO.

30k is so damn fun, I don’t want it to end!

Yup!

Train has no breaks  !

It may have stalled at the most recent stop but I have a good feeling about Malevolence now.

Once they've got all 18 Legions out, I think people will relax a bit and just go along with the flow. There's no reason to rush it, we're only going to get one chance to enjoy this series...

LotR is still a thing. WW2 was only so long but Flames of War still puts out books even though each front has been done multiple times.

It seems to me as long as it sells it’s going to keep on going. I can see Heresy doing something similar in the long run if it keeps on being profitable.

That is so true. The last weekender was awesome. Sitting in front of the monitor, hitting the refresh button, hoping for new stuff to be postet. Just great. And every new black book ia such a delight.

Which never ceases to amaze me.

I know noone who plays it, but it is a thing. Never played it though so... who knows, maybe I miss something great?

I remember painting and collecting LoTR when it just came out (the P.Jackson movies were super hot). The minis were great (why did they go for 25mm scale though?) but the gaming system felt very simplistic compared to WHF/40K and I didn't like it. I suspect 8th ED took some elements from LoTR (destiny points -> command points, fixed to hit values instead of relative tables, etc.). Don't want to derail the tread though.

To stay on topic: 15-20 books sounds orgasmic. My biggest fear for our hobby was that everything would stop after the book covering the Siege of Terra, instead of exploring all of the other material available around that timeline (a bit before, a bit after, etc.). The BaC and BoP boxset are the biggest booster to kickstarting 30k and keeping it going. I hope we will get more 30k boxsets of the like in the future.

I think that after 19 books, then the 20th is the Siege, we'll have probably covered enough by then :p

In you know, a decade or so :D

So long as releases are relatively consistent timing wise I am more than happy to stay on the train. Think this will be the longest break we have had between books?

Cant happen soon enough. Been using and liking the 30k online 8th edition PDFs to get games in and they are brilliant and feel like the original for the new system. A shame FW wont simply copy it(and I know many of the various reasons why they wont). 8th is a much more dynamic game and gets more so with each codex release. What we thought was a simple game has turned out to be so much more complex now that most armies have codices and more than 3 stratagems.
