Warlords, Detachments and Relics

Question:

 

Can a player use an "Armoury of..." type stratagem to pay for a relic from that codex, if their Warlord is from another codex?

 

 

RULES: 

 

In order to use relics most (all?) of the new dexs have the following verbiage:

 

"If your army is led by a "X ARMY" Warlord, then before the battle you may give one of the following items to a "X ARMY" CHARACTER".

 

However,  Most of the "Armoury" type stratagems have the following wording:

 

"Your army can have one extra Relic for 1 CP, or two extra Relics for 3 CPs. All of the Relics that you include must be different and be given to different X CHARACTERS. You can only use this Stratagem once."

 

 

ARGUMENT AGAINST: 

 

The argument against is that the Warlord prerequisite "unlocks" the access to relics.  

Because a certain faction Warlord is required to "unlock" the access to the relics, this prerequisite is not met in the case of the stratagem use.  

 

 

ARGUMENT FOR:

 

 

The verbiage of the relic use and its specific restrictions/parameters is simply and explicitly an "If-then" condition for access to one character being able to receive a relic.  Nothing more, or less. 

 

There's no wording to suggest "access being granted to relics under different circumstances" - simply that if your warlord is from that dex, one character can get a relic. 

The Strat however, requires or references no prerequisite.   Simply that you can have an extra relic.

 

 

CRUX:

 

Strat does not imply warlord as prerequisite vs. relic rule implies warlord as prerequisite.  
 

What are your thoughts?

While a touch "gamey", the wording used all suggests it is allowed.

 

The two rules are totally independent of each other:

• Your BLOOD ANGELS Warlord unlocks a single relic.

Then, before the game begins:

• You spend 1 CP to use the Armoury stratagem for an extra relic, that must be given to an ASTRA MILITARUM character.

 

I think some may argue that the word "extra" would imply that they need to be taken from the same faction as the original - but rules as written so not suggest this.

 

I imagine this may be something GW cracks down on in a future FAQ though, changing the wording of the stratagem to say "this can only be used if your warlord is BLOOD ANGELS etc"

As a further question

How does the wording handle if you take a Blood angels HQ for example 
But want to take a AM relic as your only relic.

Would you need to use a stratagem to access AM relics ?

Your only "free" relic, must be from the same faction as your warlord.

 

So if your Warlord is Blood Angels but you want an Astra Militarum relic, you would still need to pay the CP.
