Hey fellow mortal followers of the four, I have a question if I may? :)

I know that most people have been using the new Guard Codex for their Renegades and Heretics but I`ve recently been reading through my Imperium Index (can`t honestly remember which number it is, the one with the guard in) and I was wondering if anyone on here would have any issue with someone using the index instead of the Codex?

This is mainly down to a fluff point of view as my force works better using those rules instead of those in the codex :P Any advice/opinions on this would be very much appreciated :D

Well, Conscripts and Commissars were nerfed twice since the Index was released, but nearly everything else was improved in some way, including the addition of Regiments, relics, Warlord traits, Stratagems, and few other small tweaks.

So unless you're intending to leverage the Conscripts and Commissars, I'm not really understanding why you wouldn't simply use the Codex over the Index? I mean, if you're just after a few things like power mauls on officers or whatever, the Index entry for those is still valid anyway.

In the end though, this really strikes me as something you should be asking the people you intend to game with - if they're okay with it, then it's fine. I mean, GW isn't going to send somebody to raid your home whilst you're playing a game to check that you're the latest official rules or anything.

It's more the fact that I want to have an Inquisitor as my HQ, tempestus command squad as command squad for him, conscripts as cultists etc :) I want to just run a wide selection of units in the army instead of having multiple detachments :P

You can still do that with the Codex; you'd just lose the Regiment benefits if you include an Inquisitor in the same detachment as Guard... But that's then the same as not having Regiments, just like the Index.

You still get to benefit from everything else that the Codex improved though, and some units can be taken in a detachment with Guard without losing the Regiment bonus (although they don't get it themselves).

For example, you can have an Inquisitor plus some Psykers in an HQ detachment, and then a main detachment with your tanks and Guard troops plus a unit of Scions. In this instance the HQ detachment doesn't get the Regiment bonus (although it doesn't matter as those of those models get it anyway), and the main detachment get all the benefits of the Regiment rules (except for the Scions as they are an exception, but they don't prevent the rest of the detachment benefiting).

So again, I really cannot see any real benefit to using the Index over the Codex, except for a few esoteric options (which are still valid anyway), or to use old rules that have been purposely removed.

However, as I said above, if you and your opponents are happy enough, then use whichever rules or models you like. :)

It's ultimately up to the people you play with. However, I've never seen a situation where people have just said sure, ignore the new rules and errata. I imagine the results if I said "hey I prefer the old rules for Conscripts and Commissars so I'm gonna use those instead of the FAQ" would not be favorable. That said, definitely check with your group, they may be ok with it.

Not like a murder has been committed, but like 5 posts down there is already a thread on this subject:

And like 10 posts below that, another one:
