What Did the Rune Priests Do?

Looking at our Rune Priest after Chapter Approved I saw their points jumped pretty dramatically. They are now more expensive than the space marines librarians as to have a similarly equipped model the Rune Priest is 103 points versus the 96 points for the librarian.

 

Looking at a base Rune Priest that is 98 points and for that you get a stat line of 2+, 3+, 4, 4, 4, 3, 9, 3+ versus the base Librarian who for 96 points gives you a psychic hood and 3+, 3+, 4, 4, 4, 3, 9, 3+. The librarian can also know one more psychic power than Rune Priest. Runic weapons also cost 2 more points than the librarian force weapons.

 

So my question is what will the Rune Priests get for all this extra cost? Will we see a return of the runic weapons being psychic protection they used to? They are weaker (as far as psychic goes) so they were cheaper because of it. Will they get stronger in the codex or at least equal to librarians?

 

What thoughts does everyone have on them in 8th? At this point I am running Njal because for 40 more points you get a beast of a psyker.

I don't use them in 8th. I didn't even use them before the price increase. If I need a psyker i turn to Njal. Usually I will get my buffs from elsewhere. WGBL and Wolf Priests are my favorites.

I know GW means well.

 

The only real thought I have is that, whenever GW does a points adjustment, they typically go for too high, and slowly come down, rather than allow an undercosted and overperforming unit, be they a single Marine or an entire Detachment.

I think njal is the sw psyker selection in most sw lists

 

I always dream we get something like nullzone. SW rp with that would be a prime assault specialist unit and throw a curve in all the meta.

One rationale of a higher price for RP is simply because SW isn't a heavy psyker army, so we pay an extra cost tax as a disincentive (I don't feel the price is SO crazy that if I want to have psyker support, I would still go RP and not a librarian). We have melee units that are more effective (cost and performance) than other chapters, and our long fangs are still the envy of many...We shouldn't get too greedy, right?

That being said, doesn't change the fact that a Rune Priest is still invaluable despite the cost inefficiency.  

 

Stand fast brothers, the wolf codex will come.  And hopefully it'll improve not just our choppiness, but also our speed and survivability.

And frankly a worse psychic phase, for the time being. Rune Priests only know 1 power from our 3, not 2 from other Chapters' 6. At least 2 of our 3 are decent enough. I'm sure the Codex will give us 2 powers out of 6, just like everyone else, we just need to wait until May-June apparently.

Won't disagree with you there, but like I said, inefficiency and effectiveness aside, the humble old Rune Priest has utilized the power of snow to save my army many times. 

 

Really don't know what GW was smoking when they released chapter approved with our rune priest price bumped up without any adjustment to gear and power level. At least before CA, our rune priest was a bit cheaper and could fit budget lists very well without breaking the bank.

 

Although a RP on bike strangely enough, is still cheaper than a Librarian on bike I think.
