It might sound counterintuitive, but...LESS gold?

What?! You can't have less gold! Go more gold... Gold cape, gold skin... ;)

Seriously though the base is huge. I find the new shield captain models are fantastic. The bare head adds a lot too. I loved doing Valoris and the cape was definitely a big part of that... I was thinking about decaling, or script work, but really as you said, aside from the cape it's tough to individualize. I did look at some cape decals myself, but left it alone.

Any advice on how to make them stand out beyond the cape?

Put lots of severed heads rolling around on the base.

<currently reading "The First Heretic"...again. heads on the floor seems to be the typical result of messing with Custodians.>

Differing color or pattern on the plume. Mine are white, but some SC are getting a red strand to callback to the traditional colours. Get creative with bitz to make them pop a little bit more than normal. One of mine uses the leaping Stormcast legs held up by scrollwork for a traditional leaping into action pose to make it obvious that he means business. You kind of need to go overboard. It's sort of like having any army of space marine captains. Everyone is already so overboard that the only good option left is to go waaaaay overboard.

I keep it subtle, just using heads without helm to make them stand out on bikes, both wardens and allarus got the option for a captain with cape/ornate shoulderplates.

I feel that is enough, as fluff wise these guys are not far removed from other custodes, compared to characters and infantry in other armies.

I ended up taking a Hip Shield and putting it over their leather loincloth thing, my guardian captain has no cape but different plume too, and my sentinel captain has a cape, plume, and shield. For my allarus and bikes I will probably use my reiver heads.
