Axineton
So on the citadel paint app when you go to choose a colour or a miniature, it has all the paints you need listed. But it has two sections, one for layer and one for drybrush. I don’t get this bit at all! Is it saying that you can choose either way to paint with these colours in each section or do you follow the layer section then follow that up with the drybrush section? Very confusing to me as there is no explanation at all. Brother Tyler
The "layer" set of paints is for highlighting by layering, while the "drybrush" set of paints is for highlighting by drybrushing. The paints are different, with the "drybrush" paints being designed for the drybrushing technique and the "layer" paints being designed for the layering technique. Yes, you could drybrush with layer paints and layer with drybrush paints, but these paint sets are based on the 'Eavy Metal method. Subtle Discord
You should also be aware in the case of Layer vs. Drybrush with GWs line, the main difference will be moisture content; Layer paints are basically normal paint and Drybrush paints are much thicker. It will be more straightforward to drybrush with a Layer paint (it's how people have been doing it for decades) than paint normally with a Drybrush paint (it will require more thinning to get to a good consistency). If I was in the position of needing to choose one over the other I'd pick a Layer paint since it's more versatile. I’d rather have a few coats on and it looks good than a thick gloopy mess cos I opted for the quicker way. Arkhanist
It does mainly come down to time and skill level. Drybrushing is a fast and simple technique, while layering and edge highlighting takes longer and needs a steadier hand. Nice quality brushes also help with the latter. You can drybrush with any paint, the thick 'drybrush' paints just mean you have to blot the brush less. Mostly I think it's a reason to sell more paints. Both techniques have their place though. Drybrushing is good for highlighting large organic surfaces such as a daemon's skin, hair and fur etc. It doesn't look that great on power armour or other hard surfaces, which is why layering and edge highlighting is the usual method there. If I remember rightly I used the drybrush technique back in the 90’s on my ultramarines. No wonder they looked pants!
