Music to accompany Horus Heresy books

Recommended Posts

I love reading the Horus Heresy books, and I love listening to epic soundtrack/neo-classical music.

As the title says, what music do you guys listen two when reading the HH?  Or when you listen to a song, which paritcular scene do you see playing in your mind?

For me:
- I see the White Scars charge the tide of Ork in Brotherhood of the Storm when I listen to TSFH "Flight of the Silverbird."
- I see Guilliman leads the counter attack upon the Word Bearers-held orbital in Know No Fear when I listen to TSFH "For the Win."
- I see Sanguinius fighting Ka'Bandha in Fear to Tread when I listen to TSFH "Immortal."
- I Picture the glory of the Imperial Palace in its entirety when I listen to TSFH "Empire of Angels."
- I imagine the Lion El'Jonson fighting the Lion (beast) in Caliban when I listen to TSFH "United We Stand, Divided We Fall."
- I imagine Sanguinius in his angelic glory when I listen to Ivan Torrent "Icarus."
The list goes on...

What songs do you guys hear when reading about a particular scene?  What scenes do you guys picture when listening to a particular song?

When I'm reading, it's nothing solely but appropriate film scores. Anything Hans Zimmer generally works a trick; Inception, Interstellar etc. Da Vinci Code/Angerls and Demons seemed appropriate for The First Heretic, as do any of the Lord of Light/Red Woman themes from Game of Thrones.

A particular favourite when reading Know No Fear was the Tron: Legacy OST.

I rarely listen to music whilst reading, and on the rare case that I do, it will typically be instrumental music. I am fond of Adrien von Ziegler and BrunuhVille's Celtic compositions, and will sometimes listen to their music whilst reading / writing / working.

This fits any WS charge...

When I see/read/think about the White Scars, I don't see them solely as Mongolians, but as ancient Chinese as well.
Therefore, many of the epic Chinese fantasy music provides a good background for the White Scars.  That's how I see it.

Okay, this may disappoint you - or not, but the music I listen to are actually not composed by Chinese composers.  However, they are labeled as Epic Chinese music, and would fit into Asian Fantasies greatly.  Though they are not China-made (made in China lol), they are very legit epic Chinese fantasy.

Here are some of my favorite fantasy Chinese music that-are-not-China-made:

This one might not be particularly Chinese, but I think it is.

You know, even the Kung Fu Panda music really captures the Asian fantasy spirit greatly.

I couldn’t listen and read at the same time! If I had to it would need to be the the Night book album by Ludovico Einaudi. My favourite pianist and this album blends into the background marvellously.

Definitely couldn’t do the death metal thing. Never understood it anyway!

These are soundtracks not true compositions. TSFH is specifically a trailer music company. The use of instruments beyond the western wheelhouse doesn’t make something ‘Chinese’ anymore than the Beatles including a sitar made them Indian. There are thousands of pieces actually made in China reflective of Chinese music you could pick before using TSFH. They are great for atmosphere, but it’s inappropriate to label them as being anything but trailer pieces.

Loving this thread! There's no way i can read a book to something as distracting as music, but there's a few select pieces of music that always evoke that Heresy / 40k vibe. In no particular order, lets do this!!

No 1:
 This is THE
theme tune for the Horus Heresy originally recommended by Tymell many moons ago in a similar thread, Judas Priests Judas Rising

No 2: TSFH have some great content but nothing quite fit's the image of Vulkan pile driving through hoards of daemons and traitors alike than Immortal Avenger! I had this repeating over and over in my head when musing on the events of Old Earth.

No 3: Cradle of Filth as a band are an acquired taste, but their 2008 concept album Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder is an absolute masterpiece of Symphonic Black Metal glory! One track in particular for many years now has resonated with the Word Bearers, it's name is Sweetest Maleficia. The worshipful pronouncements of sacrifice at the beginning perfectly set the scene for the song which really hits it's pace at 0:32. Towards the end of The First Heretic there's a reveal of what has been done to quell the messages from Aquillon and co from reaching Terra, this tune fits that scene of imagined sacrifice perfectly.

No 4: Kasuf Returns from 1994's Stargate pretty much sums up the closing events of the Siege of Terra for me. It's an amazingly evocative piece that I've played out over and over in my head to the following timing cues:

0:05 the shields of the Vengeful Spirit come down

0:10 see's Primarchs, Custodes and Astartes gather, the mighty Angel bloodied and unbroken rallying the troops for a massed assault to the heart of Horus's cancerous rebellion! The Emperor at the fore, mass teleportations strike skyward!

0:32 the Angel is loose, ahead of all other loyalists, cutting down all who stand before him!

0:45 Custodes & Astartes are in, Bolters blazing, Guardian Spears constantly in motion. The Son's of Horus die in swathes as battle intensifies.

1:30 The Angle stops. He is alone, a carpet of butchered daemons and traitors lining the floor in his wake.

1:37 he knows something is wrong, darkness crawls over the surface of everything around him.

1:45 he see's a light, distant, blood red, calling to him. He approaches.

2:00 the light is blinding, voices whisper, he hears his name and roars in defiance as he raises his sword.

2:13 the light begins to fade, bleeding out of existence. He can see something, just there, the hulking outline of something... something black.

2:24 you, what have you become, brother?!

2:28 Wings spread wide, a golden aura of power emanating from his form, the Angel Surges forward to kill the Arch Traitor, Horus!

2:47 he is too fast, he is too strong, i can see the end, Father!

2:54 There, your confidence betrays you Horus, you've left yourself wide open!!!

3:00 armour is broken, but it's much too little and far too late. The Angel falls.

Now if you'll excuse me, i need to go take a cold shower lol

I didn't actually mean "songs you listen to while you are reading the HH books", but rather "songs that make you think about a particular scene in the HH series".

Phew, quite a few things come to mind!

Blue Öyster Cult - Veteran of the Psychic Wars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=am1oAOoST1E

This song comes to mind whenever I read something situated during the Unification Wars (Memories, Flashbacks, what have you), just because BÖC style sounds so unique and weird, and because the association with the animated movie Heavy Metal brings back so many fond memories of Confrontation and the art that belongs to it, which I incidentally heavily associate with the UW.

Schelmish - Rabenballade (Ballad of Three Ravens) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BgxcbBQlK4

This cover comes to mind whenever I think/read about the aftermath of the Massacres at Istvaan III/V. The whole theme of ravens circling a dead hero, waiting for his hounds to disperse so that they can feed, and the inherent dreariness and sadness in both voice and melody conjure up scenes of blackened sand, blood spilled in treachery and grief weighing down sons that witnessed the beginning of the end.

Triarii - The Final Legion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FklZ2-rRCVM

Now, I do not know how accurate this is or if it is even a proper reconstruction of the Roman anthem (Some say it is, but I am not so sure) as my usual field of history belongs to medieval Europe and the Balkans in the modern era, but whenever I read about armies of the Imperium marshalling their forces, marching against an enemy or simply assembling in line, this is what comes to my mind. No matter if it is the Imperial Auxilia, the Solar Auxilia, the Legions, the Mechanicum; all are unified beneath the thunder of this anthem.

Walther von der Vogelweide - Palästinalied https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_zjgZJOFl4

Interpreted by the musician Arany Zoltan, this seminal piece of medieval poetry/songwriting (The distinction is not easily made in that era) in middle-high-german is what I play in my mind when reading about Imperial Knights. In general, I associate medieval german culture and middle-high-german with Imperial Knights and it is what I imagine they would talk amongst themselves. Middle-high-german has always conjured this image of honour, prestige and knightly culture (One of the many reasons I focus on it in my studies) and imagining hearing that language and music reproduced in the far future of the 31st millenium just perfectly encapsulates the Imperial Knights as an archetype for me.

The Floppotron - Anything (In this case Running in the 90s) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATFaTEYolYU&list=LLlOcp3NLNm6a1LXcXCOQVBg&index=146&t=0s

If there is anything more Mechanicum-y to my ears than the Floppotron, then I haven't found it. Basically, some Polish fella (Pawel Zadrozniak) took a bunch of old computer parts, rigged them together, and created an orchestra abomination of delightfully mechanical and electronic noises. Apart from AOL screeching, this is what the lighter, more humoristic side of the Mechanicum sounds to me; rigid, electric, weird and yet sort of funky and dry-witted.

Die Ärzte - Sohn der Leere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tg5Gx6_-OU&list=LLlOcp3NLNm6a1LXcXCOQVBg&index=214

A fascinating example of german punk-rock legend Die Ärzte's versaitility, this song deals with the demystification we all go through as we grow up or mature as individuals. This is what played in my mind while I read Perturabo from the Primarchs anthology, because if any song illustrates disillusion with things one held as grand once, then it is this one. Perturabo, mastermind of art and technology, weeps as his father descends from the skies and expects/hopes for a future as bright as the sun, filled with wars, yes, but also wonders and appreciation for him as a person, not just as a tool. His sons, once one of the most lauded legions and forces of the Unification Wars and the early Crusade, find themselves inefficient and inflexible. They fall from grace, divorced from their own former greatness. Suddenly, their father is returned to them and all they can see is hope for a better future. Surely their father will transform their legion, like Horus, Fulgrim and Russ had before? Instead, they are handed a man whose first order is to decimate his own sons. This song evokes images of Dantioch, Perturabo, Golg, even the regular Iron Warriors lineman in my mind. They all wanted, expected more, but eventually realised that the future was not gold. It was iron.

Miracle of Sound - Hell to Pay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjIVkl34Vig&t=96s

That scene where Khârn and the boys are facing Ultramarines and decide that it is their turn to lay down some blows? Yeah, I can't listen to this song without picturing the scene.

This fits any WS charge...

https://youtu.be/gN6cJ1lmyZo

Yeah, when I first read Scars, certain scenes had me thinking of this piece.

'The Siege of Gondor' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSoR43Pq79g) is my theme song for the IV Legion. From 3:17 to around 4:11 puts me in mind of the Black Judges campaign on Justice Rock as described in the FW black book. That and other parts seem to capture the relentless hammering away of the Iron Warriors as the enemy is gripped by increasing dread. Plus at 7:50 I can just picture some warsmith telling his subordinate: "Grond will breach it..." and from 8:02 slaves dragging a massive siege gun into place as Imperial defenders look on helplessly.

The Prometheus 'Life' theme from 0:44 onwards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzI3AdpA9e4) I tend to associate with two different scenes. One's from Unremembered Empire when the Pharos beacon is activated:

"From the heart of the storm they came, over hours, then days, then weeks: lone ships, wounded vessels, broken flotillas and piecemeal fleets. They were the lost and the damned, survivors and refugees, men fleeing battles or hunting for them, or simply voyagers seeking shelter from the madness of the Ruinstorm.

And they came to Macragge, the light in the darkness."

The other is the final chapter of Deathfire when

Numeon offers himself as the final sacrifice to resurrect his gene-sire

When I was a kid my local GW used to have a CD it would play on repeat. It was mostly Mötley Crüe and Metallica but with Duel of the Fates and the Lord of the Rings soundtrack thrown in as well. GW used to be a very different place filled with metal head staff. I remember one guy telling 15 year old me about how he had slept with the manager of Cannibal Corpse (who he stressed was a woman) the night before and had done so much cocaine his nose bled. They'd never do that now.

Oh and Danse de Chevaliers by Prokofiev always reminds me of Titans.
