Grey Knights competitive hobby blog - first video

Recommended Posts

Hi all

After going back to back at CANCON (Australia's biggest competitive tourney) I've decided to take a step back this year and give one of the less represented codices a go. GK have always been a passion of mine, I regularly lurk the sub-forum here and see what you guys are up to.

This year I'm challenging myself to stick to primarily GK (with up to 25% allies per list), I will be trying my best to take down top ITC ranked GK overall.

Here is a short video I've made discussing my hobby focus for the year as well as my original impressions of GK, I will be going into more detailed tactica videos once the FAQ drops (and I start writing serious lists).

Would love some feedback, I will also post future videos in this thread and update the OP to include the additional links.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

The video is very interesting, and I'll be excited to see more.

But you sir, are a master of goal setting! I own a company that teaches skills like that to kids in school, and your method there is a masterclass of effective goal setting!

Pre-determined compromise? Reasonable expectations designed to stretch your abilities? A plan of action and stock of strengths and weaknesses? Genius!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Sounds like an awesome company Ninjoe, they are great skills to teach kids. I teach at University so I *should* have some good goal-setting ability and organisational skills to impart.

I am (not-so) patiently waiting for the FAQ to come out, so I made another video that I'll post in here for people that enjoyed my last one. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

My next video will be a response to the FAQ, specifically about its effects on GK and how I will build my lists going forward.

While I know you're waiting for the FAQ to confidently build up your list, I might as well add a GK list that did tremendously well in the recent No Retreat V Tournament.

Toby, the GK player won all 5 of his games and just missed out on 1st Place due to points.

gallery_93452_13143_412628.jpg

His list was a Battalion + Outrider Detachment.

Battalion Detachment:

HQ

- GMNDK

- GMNDK

TROOP

- Strike Squad x5

- Strike Squad x5

- Strike Squad x5

FLYER

- Stormraven

Outrider Detachment

HQ

- Draigo

FAST ATTACK

- Interceptors x5

- Interceptors x5

- Interceptors x10

Sure, as a mono GK army it has clear weaknesses but It is particularly mobile and flexible in movement. The rest, was due to the Toby's skill and knowledge of how the other armies in front of him work. Really cool to see such GK success, and I am interested to see in how you build up your own GK army!

Thanks for posting that Waking Dreamer, I think that is a really refined and tight GK list. I'm not surprised it did so well.

I just released my FAQ feedback video, am posting it here. I am going to release a GK focused tactica/analysis video very shortly that will go into detail about how I think GK can 'stay above water' in the post-faq environment.

I didn't watch the video but I assume it's about a turn 2 deep strike with <9"? In that case, yeah no way that's gonna happen. With all the deep striking flamer, Melta and easy charges the situation would be worse than before the beta rule lol

Check out the video, I'd love your feedback ;)

Reckless deep strike is that you can deep strike within 9'' (probably not within 3'')  but cannot charge afterwards and are -1 to hit with your own shooting.

t's a big buff to flamers, but let's be honest, they need it. Currently you can't use a flamer after deep striking which is very different from last edition.

The rule is primarily designed to prevent the ridiculous 18'' apart matrix which totally prevents deep strike from being relevant. With a 3'' restriction you could still create a matrix with your models 6.5'' apart which is still decent.

Can't be bothered. I don't listen to podcasts and I don't watch podcast-ish videos.

But okay since you typed it out. Yeah that's a huge buff to flamers. A bit too much I'd say. Still leaves the problem of assault units who got hit the hardest by the beta rule and weren't the reason for it in the first place. Hitting melta on -1 is still good enough for the most part.

Pretty good rundown on what's mostly the accepted wisdom on GKs. You left out Voldus, who I think is a pretty good shout as a L3 Psyker with basically Draigo's melee output (and other tradeoffs anyone can read) for 50 pts less. His value goes up a lot relatively if you're not going that heavy into GKs so you aren't at psychic power saturation and not e.g. boosting Ravens with Draigo's full power aura. Not saying it's a huge omission but I think he's worth keeping in mind.

If you get some playtesting done that'll be interesting.

Thanks for that, I actually totally agree with your comment on Voldus.

I personally think Draigo is a better option but that doesn't made Voldus bad. At the very least I should have mentioned him as a competitive HQ and described why I think Draigo is superior.

I have a few major tournaments coming up, I'm excited to see how the list performs :)

Hope you don't mind myself posting it, but caught your video about your tourney results and needless to say as a GK player, congrats and it was so inspiring hearing about your experience!

As a quick rundown (all the details in the video) for the others here:

- Eastcon Tournament 2018

- ITC Rules

- Mono Grey Knights army

- GK Terminators for Troops

- 5/5 wins

- Overall 2nd place

Again congrats!

Thanks so much for posting that Waking Dreamer. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

I have a 2000 point event coming up this weekend (only a 3 game RTT) but I've decided to go with my GK + Sisters double battalion list.

For those interested, the list is:

DKGM with psilencer, psycannon, sword
DKGM with psilencer, psycannon, sword

3x5 termies (4 falchions, 1 hammer)
ancient with falchion, cuirass of sacrifice (WARLORD with first to the fray)

Celestine
Canoness with maul and stormbolter

2x5 sisters with bolters
5 sisters with 3 stormbolters
Rhino with 2 stormbolters and a hunter killer missile
Repressor with 2 stormbolters and heavy flamer

The idea is that that I deploy both DKGMs and gate one forward on turn one with the 2++. The second provides redundancy and can also 'take up the mantle' of the 2++ once the first aggressive one dies.

Two units of terminators will come down turn 2 with the ancient. The other squad will deploy to cast gate on the DKGM. These can then gate themselves forward on turn 2. All the terminators need to deploy very dynamically every game. Some games you will want to be hyper-aggressive. Other games they will take up defensive positions in cover.

Celestine and the repressor (with canoness and the squad with the stormbolters) will be very aggressive, while the rhino and other 2 sister units will hold back objectives in most games. I am so excited for my 9 point sisters in cover with a 2+ :smile.:

Thanks, InquisitorBlack. I enjoyed the new video. Congrats on doing so well in the tourney!

I found your success with Terminators to be a surprise. But using them to deny ITC kill points is a great idea. I wish they worked better in the non-ITC world of matched play.

It is helpful to see your adjustments to the previous list. Can't wait to seee how they do!
