How many Tactical marines is enough?

I will start off by saying that my 30k gaming experience isn't as extensive as most but what I have gleaned from my games in regards to Tacticals is that the amount of them is dependent on the game size and your meta.

I find in games over 2.5k that they get killed off so quickly that they're better off being objective sitters/capturers. 2x 10 men in rhinos are cheap and usually get ignored in favour of the big stuff.

In lesser point games, and especially in the Centurion format, Tacticals are golden.  It's a lot more feasable to take 2x 20 man blobs with apothecaries and march them up the board as there aren't usually any big guns to wipe them out.

In saying that, it is very dependent on your meta as well. My meta is very narrative based so I dont see a lot of Phosphex or Typhons which can annhilate a 20 man blob in a heartbeat.

To sum up, in 3k games and above you will probably only ever take 2x 10 man squads. In 2K or Centurianyou may be tempted to take max squads. 40 tacticals is a nice number to have. Thy're not that fun to paint but you will never need more than that.

It depends on your RoW, the Legion you are using, and your meta.

With the Sons of Horus, using the Long March at 3,000 points, I use 3 Tactical Squads of 20 Marines each (60 total). All armed with extra close combat weapons, and an Apothecary. The other guys in my meta go for Primarchs and Lords of War or heavy point sink units to fill out 3,000 points. They take their 2,500 point list and just modify it. I rewrite my list at 3,000 points as its one of the "tipping points" of list building. My list is predominantly infantry walking across the table.

I never understood players who have one list which they play again and again. For every game I make a new one.

Sure, there are some units which I take more often then others but I still make a new one every time.
